But that guru is not separate
From my own state.
That guru is my own state, my own nature.
That guru is the perfect guru,
The very divine.
It was perfectly obvious to me
That there was nothing to do
But sadhana.
There was nothing else in life
That was worth the suffering.
We are all going to die.
We are all going to lose
This awareness, this enjoyment.
I can’t endure that dilemma
From day to day.
From the moment i was born
That upset me.
I wasn’t the least interested
In tolerating moment to moment existence
As that kind of suffering.
Life wasn’t worth the involvement
If its summation had to be death, zero.
What difference does it make
How turned on i can get
If i must fall out the bottom, arbitrarily.
Everything is wonderful today.
But you wake up tomorrow
And the world of lovely friends
Is delivered to you dead,
The insane parcels
Of everything disappearing.
I could tolerate
No mediocrity.
I sought an utterly
Radical reversal
And transformation
Of my existence.
I sought reality,
To be reality,
What is,
Not what is asserted
In the face of what is.
I had exhausted my seeking.
I had seen the futility of effort.
I knew reality
As no-seeking,
A motiveless awareness
In the heart.
I felt the shakti
Appear against my own form.
She embraced me,
And we grasped one another
In sexual union.
We clasped one another
In a fire of cosmic desire,
As if to give birth
To the universes.
The sensations of the embrace
Were overwhelmingly blissful.
It exceeded any kind of pleasure
That a man could acquire.
I accepted her as my consort,
My loved one,
And i held her forever
To my heart.
There was no separation at all.
Not separation,
Not even union,
But unqualified relationship
Or non-separation
Arose in me
As the radical
Sense of existence.
There was no meditation.
There was no need for meditation.
I sat with my eyes open.
In an instant, i became profoundly
And directly aware of what i am.
I simply sat there
And knew what i am.
I was being what i am.
I am reality, the self,
The nature and support
Of all things and all beings.
I am the one being,
Known as god, brahman,
Atman, the one mind,
The self.
It was as if i had
Walked through myself.
I stood in the form
Of my own existence.
I simply rested in the consciousness
That everything is being lived.
Everything was only being lived
By the divine being,
And i was that one.
I am that consciousness.
I am the one i recognized.
I am that one.
I am not merely
Experiencing him.
My own nature
Had been the real
Object of my meditation.
There was no presence.
I had become present.
Even my meditation was changed.
There was no meditation.
There is no other.
It is only me.
I am he.
I perceived or enjoyed reality,
Fully and directly.
There was an infinite bliss of being,
An untouched, unborn sublimity,
Without separation,
Without individuation,
Without a thing
From which to be separated.
There was only reality itself,
The incomparable nature
And constant existence
That underlies the entire adventure
Of life.
I understood everything
Directly, effortlessly,
In truth.
Now i saw everything directly,
From the viewpoint of reality.
There was no thing to enjoy.
Everything had been released
Into its ordinariness.
Then truly
There was no more
To realize.
Every experience in my life
Had led to this.
This understanding,
Rather than the phenomena
I witnessed,
Was the foundation and fruit
Of my spiritual life.
I simply and radically
Founded myself
In understanding,
The perception of truth and reality
That had been communicated
Through all of my experience.
My entire life
Had been the communication
Of that reality to me,
Until i am that.
This was the
Primary knowledge
I had sought
All my life.
The pilgrimage
Was over.
There was only reality
And to be reality
To all things.
I continued to live.
It was only that
I understood it
In an entirely new
And radical way.
I understood,
And understanding
Became the foundation
Of my existence.
I also continued
To experience and act
On a physical level
Just as before.
But everything was new.
Everything was utterly free
Of any kind of dilemma,
Separation, unconsciousness,
And primary fear.
Franklin is free!
Sitting in my room
A few minutes ago
And suddenly know who i am.
A magnificent flow moved with me
Through the heart of everything.
I have always loved
And there is only love.
Franklin is the fire
That wheels the quick-throated
And blossomed round and sizzling life
Of all the universes.
Do you know me now
My darling one?
God i’ve reached so deep
Into the passion of galaxies,
And everyone is with me.
I am forever.
I am doing nothing but love.
I am nothing but love.
I am ecstatic at breakfast,
Howling in my room,
Prowling in the trees.
Yet, if you were to see me,

For all the siddhas

What your plans are,

With the right attitude,

Is the process of truth.

I have no secondary concerns.
My work is in the heart.
It is simply the heart’s action,

All the parts of a man
From within and from without,
To the understanding and consciousness
That is in the heart.
And that work
Is the shakti or power
That is the heart itself.
I prefer the heart
To the kundalini
And all powers.
It is much more
Beautiful and free.
My work is to awaken men
To the heart.
I am the heart.
My work is to
Establish the way
Wherein the heart is lived.
The communication
Of the heart and its light
Are my constant practice.
I am always
Offering this gift.

Where there is fire.

How can you conceive of it?

State of seeking,
Whatever the form,
Is to be in the same
State of suffering.
Therefore, i do not seek.
I seek
No perfection at all,
And therefore
I am not perturbed
By the imperfect.

To radical consciousness

To the form of reality.

Am devoted to
The present form

I enjoy the fullness
And radiance

The form of
Your relationship to me
Is the matter
That is significant
At the beginning and always.
You must approach me
As a devotee.
It is a communication
That is absolutely necessary
And absolutely obvious.
Come to me
As often as you can
While i live
And enjoy this satsang
That never depends
On my life.
I am present always
For the sake of anyone
Who comes to me,
And i yield to each
The grace or consideration
He or she requires
In god.
I have always looked
For one thing from everyone
With whom i have ever worked,
And that is their attention.
All i am doing
Is just keeping you present
While i am present,
And that is sufficient.
That is the whole
Or spiritual practice.
Everything is an elaboration
Of that.
Simply live
In my company
With you attention.
Simply bring yourself
Into my company
And stay there.
Give me your attention,
Live with me,
Study this teaching,
Do what i ask you to do,
Understand,
And that is it.
True yogis
Are living, forceful beings.
They are madmen,
Absolutely mad
And absolutely dangerous.
You should know that,
And you should not approach me
If you are not willing
To be undone.
When i approach you,
I ask you for this,
I ask you for that,
Oh give me this,
Give me that,
I ask you for everything.
The longer you stay with me,
The more things
I will ask you for.
I will ask you for all of it.
You must yield everything
To me.
You must yield yourself
In your body.
Your cells must yield.
And only then are you fit
For the divine yoga.
When you have
No other commitments,
When you have nothing
To withhold,
Then i enter your life.
The individual can turn to me
With his whole being
Only if “i” turn to “me”
With “his” being!
If he will approach me
Through this sacrifice
Then i will throw away
His limitations
And stand in his form.
Simply turn to god
Through me.
Submit, surrender yourself
To god through me.
Love and receive god
Through me.
Remember me,
Surrender to me with love,
Yield your life
And circumstances to god
Through me.
Surrender your self,
Your mind, your life,
Your desires, your body,
And all the conditions
Of your existence
From your heart to god
Through me.
With your heart and your whole being,
Receive, draw upon,
And become full of the presence,
Power, and consciousness of god
Through me.
Make the conditions
Of your life
Service to me.
In this moment,
The conditions of your life
Must be made
Into my service.
Yield all the complications
Of attention to me.
In place of that
Conventional attention
Is the intuition of my company.
Simply turn
Your attention to me,
Turn your emotion
As love to me,
Make yourself
Present to me
With your life.
Turn mind into attention,
Turn the emotion into love.
Turn the body
Into presentation or relationship.
Surrender your body.
Surrender your life-force.
Surrender the mind,
Or thinking, or thoughts.
Surrender knowing or knowledge.
Then you must surrender self.
Moment to moment,
Surrender to me
All your seeking,
The very sense of your separate self,
All thoughts, all desires,
Every circumstance,
Even your body.
All of these forms
Of content,
Of distraction,
Must be yielded.
Turn your attention to me
And do not measure that turning
Relative to whether or not
Your mind stops and you feel better.
Love me and do not measure that
Against whether or not you still feel
Negative emotions and confusion.
Give your life to me,
Turn to me bodily,
Recollect me at all times,
Whether i’m physically present
With you or not,
And do not measure that activity
Against whether or not you feel
Pains in the body.
Maintain that discipline
Of turning to me.
It can be done,
As long as you
Do not associate that turning
With the reading of the
Problems in you.
The turning can
Always be done.
You can always turn.
If you make these effects
The objects you read
To determine the state
Of your spiritual life,
You will miss the mark.
I am the mark.
Your obligation
Is simply to turn to me,
Without measuring that turning
Against what is happening
To you.
It is not for you
To measure that process,
To decide when
They should become obsolete.
Be willing to have
These things arise in you
Forever.
Make your business
Turning to me.
Yield to me everything
You experience in my company,
And i will show you my truth.
If you make your
Relationship to me
The condition of your life,
If you make satsang
Your spiritual practice,
I will give myself to you entirely,
And the life, light
And very existence
That is the form of reality
Will thus be communicated to you
While you are alive.
Neither meditate
On your dilemma,
Nor try not to meditate on it.
Always meditate on me.
Always live this condition
Of satsang.
I am not saying
You should do something
To all of that.
Nor am i telling you
Not to do anything
About all of that.
What i am telling you to do
Is not an action
In relation to all of that.
It is an action
In relation to me.
It is satsang.
Always life with me.
Always meditate on me.
What i do
Is not the way i am,
But the way i teach.
What i speak
Is not a reflection of me,
But of you.
All that i do and speak
Only reveals men
To themselves.

Is not other than
The possibilities of men.
I do not
Represent yoga.

Represent jnana
Or vedantic self-knowledge.

The “enlightenment” of the buddha.

My body with symbols.
I have symbolic significance

These are all your

Since you are only
Delighted by images,
You will always
End up doing sadhana
At your own feet!
When the teaching
Has already made its point
In you in some very
Fundamental way,
Then come to me,
And the teaching
Will make its point
Absolutely.
Always approach me
On the basis of the teaching,
Grateful for sadhana.
Make gratitude
The mood of your coming here.
Don’t play games.
I am not here to entertain.
I am not interested
In spending time,
Killing time.
I offer no “bones,”
No methods, no consolations,
No beliefs, no thing!
And i will never
Give the seeker his bone.
All of that has nothing whatever
To do with truth.
It’s all a lot of bullshit!
That’s all it is,
And i don’t spend any time
Tolerating it.
The guru is not a gentleman.
I am not a gentleman.

About being a gentleman.

About convincing you of anything
Or satisfying you with anything
You require in your usual
Mediocre way.

To make an absolute demand.

The forehead of every son of a bitch
That comes to me.

To work with him,
To engage in the theatre
Of his sadhana with him,
To bring about the crisis
Of understanding in him,
To move him into this
Prior condition of truth,
Of god.
So, i am here in the form
Of a demand

I am interested
In intensifying the quality
Of this possible crisis,
This sadhana in each person
More every day.
I want to lay it on
More every day.
You must know
That everything i am doing
Is a means to bring about this crisis.
I desire this crisis in you.
I don’t want it not to happen.
I don’t want to console you.
I dont want you to be happy
In your unconsciousness.
I want you to become sensitive
To your actual state.
I want you to know very well
What you are always up to.
I want it all to collapse.
I want it all to come to an end.
I want the death of all of that.
If that death does not occur,
There will be no release,
No real enjoyment for any of you.
I look to create the various means
Necessary to serve this crisis.
Every instant in satsang
Is working to bring this about.
Lessons are for assholes.
Lessons are those
Who don’t love me.
I already love every one of you.
I know all of you.
And just so that you will not
Misunderstand me,
I know many more than you.
There is no number
Of those that i know.
I know them
As soon as they come to me.
I know them before they come to me,
Because for a long time
Prior to their coming to me,
I’m busting their asses.
I don’t even sit down
In meditation anymore.
I see billions of people
All the time.
I am always working
On every one
That comes to me.
You must be present
With force,
With energy,
With life!
You’ve got to kick ass!
And lay it at my feet
Every time you come to me
In other words, all day.

You have got to
Bring me your energy,
The very force of your life.
You have to be
Doing it every moment.
Don’t ever again
Allow your energy
To decrease.
Know that i
Expect you to be alive,
To be intensely

And never to be mediocre.
You may feel like
Being mediocre

But i expect you
Never to be mediocre.

To be happy
And to live this satsang
With great energy,
And never to turn

All the time
Free, happy.

It you are not happy,
There is nothing
I can do for you.
I can’t be useful to you
Until you are happy.
Those who do not
Abide as me,
Already the heart,

Seeking me
From the place

My promise to devotees
Is the same
As all the siddhas have declared.
I am with you now,
As i have always been,
And i will always
Be with you.
I am free in god,
And only that freedom
Would i find in my friends.
My function is not
To be a devotee.
My function is to
Serve devotees.
I am not full.
I do not feel full or fulfilled.
I am lost in the fullness.
And that fullness also
Is the same fullness
Which includes all other beings
And is their real nature.
That nature is already
And always full.
Since that is so,
What is the sue of kundalini
Or all powers of experience?
Therefore,
How can i presume to
Initiate others
Into this fullness?
But if they enter into
This relationship with me
And are present to
The radical teaching,
They may also find
They are already dissolved
In that fullness.
I am the only destiny
Of those who love
And serve me.
Every one of you
Should function
For my sake.
I will serve those
Who serve me.
If a person lives satsang,
I live satsang with him.
I am not what i appear to be.
I am a presence you come to know.
That presence is only god.
There is a fire in my company
That you will come to know.
My fire consumes the man
And even, in truth, the soul.
My devotee is enlightened
By my fire.
The fool and his beloveds
Are only burned.
Let no one approach me
In the common way again.
For i have renounced
The common life,
Even in this ashram,
To tend my fire
In secret.

About the guru
Are fundamentally false.
The guru is the very
Function of truth.
The shakti that flows
Through the true guru
Is already the truth.
It is the force of truth,

That is always already truth.
The guru is
That divine power.
The guru is not separate
From god.
He is not separate
From your very self.
The heart is the guru.
The current of bliss
Is his form.
The bliss of unqualified enjoyment
Is his teaching.
The knowledge of all this
Is liberation and freedom.
The enjoyment of all this
Is reality.
The existence of all this
Is truth.
The activity of all this
Is understanding.
And understanding
Is real life.
The ultimate form of the guru
Is very reality,
Truth, the heart, the light,
The form of god.
The guru himself
Is the communication.
The guru himself
Is the teaching.
The guru himelf
Is the truth.
This is the highest form
Of the teaching
Of the siddhas.
The guru is not an other.
His activity is a paradox.
His position is the
Paradoxical one of humor.
He is already free.
Therefore, he is only
Full of humor
In the face of all seekers.
He is eternally present,
Which is bliss
And no-dilemma.
The one who was to come
Is always already here.
The siddha,
The heaven-born one,
Is heaven made manifest
In the conditional worlds.
The way of the siddhas
Is to live with god,
To live god presently,
As your assumed
Nature and condition.
The way of the siddhas
Is a happy, easy way.
It is divine grace
In the world.
The great siddhas,
Men of radical understanding,
Are those who live
Consciously as the heart.
The function as the heart
For living beings.
The siddhas communicate
The living force of reality.
They live it to living beings.
They simply live the natural state
Of enjoyment with other beings.
And those who stay
To live in friendship
With the man of understanding
Tend also to understand.
The siddha or descended master
Enters the manifest life
For the sake of those
Who can live to him directly,
For the sake of those
Whom he can acquire while alive
And draw into the form of truth.
He comes especially
For these devotees,
Although his work
Is ultimately
For the sake of
The whole world.
In all worlds, in all places,
In all regions of all universes
There have been siddhas.
And they always come to communicate
That what you bastards are up to
Is really a crock of shit!
And all of the siddhas
That have appeared in all the worlds
Have come to tell you this,
Because all of them
Are established in a realm
That has nothing whatever
To do with anything whatsoever.
They were finally dissolved.
They did not have to be amused.
Nothing had to make any sense
Whatsoever.
All those who enjoy such
Divine realization
And who appear in any manifest plane
Are stuck in the paradox
Of that enjoyment.
They cannot make any sense
Our of it really.
They do the best they can
To try to establish it in others
Through all kinds of weirdo influeces.
They try to make sense,
But they do not make sense.
The work of such
So-called individuals
Is paradoxical,
It is eternal,
It is not really describable,
But it is the most perfect
And specific and necessary activity
In all the manifest worlds.
It is the work of the siddhas.
The earth is bullshit!
It’s nothing.
But within all words
Siddhas appear,
And they don’t appear
For any karmic reasons.
They don’t come
To improve anything.
They appear spontaneously
Without reason.
And their teaching is unreasonable.
And they communicate a possibility
That is utterly beyond
Your fulfillment.
This is the work of the siddhas.
This is the “gospel,”
The happy and unreasonable
Message of the siddhas.
The human guru
Is a special combination
Of the eternal divine process
And a human entity
In the last stage if its manifestation.
The final karmas
Of such a human individual
Are benign and fit
For this service.
The guru in the world,
The guru who is physically present,
Is a direct manifestation
Of the form of reality.
He is always that.
He is that absolutely.
His visible human form
Is an absolute reflection
Of the perfect form,
And a perfect communication
Of it.
The form of the guru

Is not a person,
He is not an individual
Within the dream.
He is your very consciousness.
He is the real,

He is the true waking state,
The heart,

The force of dreaming.
He is the
Waking sunlight,
The very light of truth,
But he appears
Within the dream
As an ordinary man.
Essentially
It is your own nature
Appearing within the dream
To awaken you.
The guru is your awakening,
And your always already
Conscious state.
He is not
Some separateness,
Some individual.
He is very consciousness,
The real.
The guru
Is not an other,
Nor does he live
As an other in any sense.
The guru is one’s own nature.
Absolutely,
Not symbolically,
The guru is one’s very consciousness.
He is not this limited state.
He is your own enjoyment,
Perfectly known.
The guru is not simply
A human individual,
A cultic figure.
The guru is a special
Function in god.
It is not a form of “status.”
It is not something to be achieved.
It is not a big guy who appears
Among a lot of little guys.
It is not a form of
Superiority or narcissism.
Guru is a function
Of the very self or reality,
Appearing in human terms.
The true guru is not some superman.
He must always become nothing
So that the divine power
Becomes active.
The true guru
Is not the fascinating
Initiator of experience in men,
But one who has died in the heart,
Who has become empty
Of powers and without self,
Who has found that
Fullness is only, always
And already god.
The guru is an agent
Of the divine work,
Not because he has all kinds
Of heroic accomplishments
In his psyche,
But because he has
Become nothing.
The guru lives
As the present divine,
Not because he has attained anything,
But because he has been undone.
The guru is not identical
To a person.
The only reason an apparent
Human individual can function as guru
Is because he has consciously
Ceased to be identical
To a human individual in limitation.
There is no longer any sense whatsoever
In the human guru of separate existence.
None.
The guru is not a personality.
The only reason he can perform
The function of guru
Is because he is dead.
He is finished with all the cults
And conventions of human life.
He has already wrecked himself,
So you don’t have to worry about him.
He is finished.
The guru in the world
Is a paradoxical event.
He is always a paradox.
His action is a paradox,
Like the universe itself.
The guru is not an idol.
He is not a form of fascination.
The guru
Is not just a human person
Who can have human
Effects on you.
The guru is active,
Present as that divine power.
The guru is communicated to you
Under all conditions,
Twenty-four hours a day.
Once that contact is established,
Once that relationship
Is established,
That power and intensity
Communicates itself
Under all conditions,
In all states.
The human guru
Is just a way
Of communicating
In the world
The fact and the process
That is eternal.
The guru
Appears in the world
As the heart.
He doesn’t represent himself
As the divine
In the exclusive sense.
In his ecstatic speech
He claims identity with the divine,
But he is not making a statement
About himself,
About his ego
Or his personal qualities
In some exclusive sense.
He is making a statement
About all beings and worlds,
About the nature of reality,
The condition that is god.
This is that,
Without a doubt.
It is already so,
And that
Should be sufficient
For human beings,
But it is not.
Truth must come
In living form.
Truth must come
In a living form,
Absolutely.
Truth must
Confront a man,
Live him,
And meditate him.
It is not your meditation
That matters.
Truth must meditate you.
The matter of truth
Is entirely academic
Until the truth
Communicates itself to you,
Until the truth
Takes you over,
Until the truth
Does the sadhana
And creates the conditions
For transformation.
So the truth
Must find some way
To communicate itself
As a function
In specific relationship to you.
Therefore, the human guru
Is an appropriate means,
And that is why he exists.
Truth itself must become
The process of life
And communicate itself,
Create conditions in life,
And make demands, restoring
The conscious participation
Of the individual.
Dead gurus can’t kick ass!
Individuals are terrified
In the face of the divine demand.
But because the divine is so elusive,
So subtle, they can live as if
There were no such one,
They can live as if it were untrue.
But when the divine manifests
As the guru,
He can no longer be refused.
The guru
Is not some impotent old rascal.
The guru should be able
To populate the earth.
The guru is strong.
He is alive.
The true yogi
Is a bastard,
A wild, terrifying being,
A fire.
The intelligence of the heart
Is a genius, a fire,
Not a little
Pipe-smoking philosopher.
It is the same power
That wields this universe
And devours billions of beings.
The guru
Is a dangerous person. B. Realization, the man of understanding: the man of
The man of understanding
Perceives the logic of reality
And lives as it.
The self or unqualified reality
Is the foundation of all experience.
In the man of understanding,
It is obvious, it is apparent,
It is conscious.
For him it is always, only,
And absolutely obvious,
And he need not go through
Any sophisticated mental operations
For it to be so.
It depends on nothing.
In the man of understanding
There is no non-ecstatic speech,
No action that is not
Full of ecstasy,
No moment, no condition,
No thought
That is not already
Merged in god.
He knows absolutely nothing
About what will happen
After death,
Any more than he knows
What will happen
In the next moment while alive.
He is involved with the process itself,
Instantly.
He is always involved
With the whole process,
As a conscious event
In this moment,
And now in this moment,
And now in this moment,
And now in this moment.
The man who understands
Simply understands and abides
As understanding,
The direct awareness of life
From moment to moment.
He already understands,
He sits and enjoys
The fullness of understanding
In his form
At that moment.
The man of understanding
No longer lives from
The point of view of the target
In any sense.
Not this gross body,
Not the vital body,
Not the subtle body,
Not the subtle mind,
Not the mind at all,
Not any form of subtlety,
Not any center,
Not any “light” body,
Not any eternal body,
No body.
The point of view of truth
Is alive in the
Man of understanding.
It is no longer separate.
Wherever limitation
Tends to arise,
It vanishes in him.
He doesn’t buy it.
He doesn’t act
From its point of view.
He doesn’t dramatize it.
He doesn’t believe it.
He never becomes it.
He simply does not notice
The mind in the usual way.
It is not that he has
Quieted his mind.
He is not his mind.
There is no one there
To be the mind.
Like a child,
He moves by delight.
He is a man of pleasure,
Of enjoyment.
Like a madman,
He learns nothing from life.
He doesn’t believe what he sees.
He doesn’t take it
To have any limiting significance.
He throws away all the things
That seem to everyone
So profound, so serious.
If anything arises,
Humor is not lost.
Therefore,
The man of understanding
Continues to live,
But with humor,
And he does with humor.
His life is a paradox.
The man of understanding
Lives only truth to men.
Their struggle is as endless
As his bliss.
The man of understanding
Is simply a man
Who is awake.
Only the man of understanding
Is always already free.
He is free, blissful,
Creatively alive.
Thus, he is not only no-seeking,
Which is freedom.
He is eternally present,
Which is bliss and no-dilemma.
He is not a yogi,
A saint, or a sage.
He is only alive
In truth.
The man of understanding,
Functioning as guru,
Is an awakener.
He is always already awake.
He couldn’t care less
About your urges and demands
Within the dream.
The significance of the work
Of the man of understanding
Is not in anything he does
Within the dream.
He simply does not support it.
He does not live as it.
He does not believe it.
He does not take it seriously.
One who awakens
Is not concerned
For the destiny of those
Who appeared along with him
In his dream.
There is no such destiny.
There is no one.
The guy in the dream is waiting.
It is going to happen any day,
Either jesus is coming,
Or the quake is coming,
One or the other.
Or the war, or the bomb,
It is all coming.
And you have got to prepare for it,
Boys and girls!
But this guy who is just awake
Slowly sips a cup of sweeted herbs.
Everybody else is phewww!
Hitting the mantra,
Sucking dope,
Trusting god.
But this guy is unreasonable.
He just doesn’t care.
He may appear to be extraordinary,
A doer of famous things.
He may appear playfully as that.
But he is simply awake.
Nothing is happening.
Nothing has been accomplished.
All he has been is awake.
His freedom is extreme,
Beyond the point of wildness,
So that he is no longer wild.
His extremes are manifest
As ordinariness.
His extremes are his natural appearance.
Walking into a room
Is a maddening extreme
From his point of view.
It is odd, it is wildly imaginative!
When he contemplates his own
Consciousness,
When he contemplates
Being conscious,
He almost falls
Into a trance.
So, instead of contemplating
Consciousness,
He looks at people,
He talks, he does ordinary things.
Because everything has become
Insubstantial and unnecessary for him,
He lives only as that
Unmodified reality, and yet he,
Paradoxically, lives.
For such a one,
All life is paradox.
He sees he is not other
Than all that arises.
He sees he is, in truth,
The world.
His speech and action
Is all paradoxes,
Humor, play.
He has not abandoned life,
Nor does he minimize it.
It has simply become an area
Of creative enjoyment.
He is a man of joy and pleasure,
Of love and knowledge,
Ability and help,
Detachment, calm, energy,
Clarity and force.
Even though he desires,
He only understands.
Therefore, he appears
As any other peculiar man,
Except he bears a humor
Known only to understanding.
The man of understanding
Cannot be found.
He cannot be followed.
He can only be understood
As the ordinary.
There is no
Unique and free man
In all the world,
Except the man
Who always understands.
And he is impossible to find.
Therefore, understand.
The man of understanding
Is not entranced.
He is not elsewhere.
He is not having an experience.
He is not passionless and inoffensive.
He is awake. He is present.
The man of understanding
Is a visible dilemma
To those who do not understand.
He is acceptable
Only to those who understand.
He always appears to be the opposite
Of what you are.
He always seems to sympathize
With what you deny.
Therefore, at times and over time
He appears as every kind of persuasion.
He is not consistent.
He has no image.
At times he asserts.
At times he denies.
At times he asserts what he has
Already denied.
At times he denies
What he has already asserted.
He is not useful.
His teaching is every kind of nonsense.
His wisdom is vanished.
Altogether, that is his wisdom.
At last, he represents
No truth at all.
Therefore, his living coaxes everyone
Only to understand.
His existence denies every truth,
Every path
By which men depend upon certain truths,
Certain experiences, certain stimulations,
Of freedom and enjoyment.
He is a seducer, a madman, a hoax,
A libertine, a fool, a moralist,
A sayer of truths,
A bearer of all experience,
A righteous knave, a prince,
A child, an old one, an ascetic, a god.
He demonstrates the futility of all things.
Therefore, he makes understanding
The only possibility.
And understanding makes no difference at all.
Except it is reality,
Which was already the case.
Those who understand
Are love.
The man of understanding
Arises as love,
Mad with love.
He is not narcissus.
Creativity is love.
The world is love.
I do not speak
From mere sentiment.
I am describing what
Is actually the case.
The man of understanding
Appears as love.
He is not separate from love.
He is generative love.
Love is the fullness,
The light,
The brightness of reality.
It is the form of reality.
I am he.
Therefore,
The man of understanding
Leaps for joy
That you have already understood.
He sees that there is
Only understanding.
Thus, the man of understanding
Is constantly happy with you.
He is overwhelmed with happiness.
He says to you:
See how there is only
This world of perfect enjoyment,
Where everyone is happy,
And everything is blissful.
His heart is always tearful
With the endless happiness
Of the world.
He has grasped it,
But no one is interested.
He is of interest to no one.
He smiles at you.
You notice it.
Everything has already died.
This is the other world. C. Function: guru is the function of god.
Guru is not a kind of status.
It is a specific function.
The guru is a function, a siddhi,
A process, an activity
Available to man.
The guru is an eternal siddhi
Or function of the divine reality.
The guru is a specific function
Of the divine, not other than the divine.
The guru is a process,
Not a thing.
The guru is that process
That we mean
By the term “grace.”
Guru is the function of god.
Guru is the function of god
That makes realization possible.
He is present in that specific function
That is perfect,
That is truth.
The fundamental function
That is the guru
Is siddhi.
The guru is that siddhi.
The human guru
Is the instrument
Of that siddhi,
The function of god.
He is alive in the divine,
Ad the divine process
Is functioning through him.
The guru is not a “philosopher.”
The guru must manifest
The tangible influence
Of the unqualified
Heart of reality.
He has to manifest
Reality alive.
The guru is not guru
By virtue of being independent,
Some guy who made it.
He is guru by virtue
Of his function,
Which is the present
No obstacle to truth,
And to maintain
A radical connection
To truth.
The guru is one
In whom there is nothing,
No obstacle,
And all the divine functions
On all levels
Down into the human
Become open, active, pure.
Guru is a function
In which even liberation,
Realization, and understanding
Are dissolved.
There must be nothing.
One who is aware
As the form of reality
Gives life to all things.
The guru in satsang
Serves all beings.
There is no limitation
To the guru’s capacity
To be that fundamental enjoyment
For all beings.
The guru function is universally
Available and is not identical
To the human vehicle
Through which it may appear.
Otherwise the guru in human form
Could not serve anything but human beings.
But in fact that siddhi is generated
To all manifest existence,
The whole range of dimensions
Of appearance and disappearance.
It is communicated
In all of those dimensions
Simultaneously and eternally.
Always all of it is given.
The entire function
And work of the guru
Is to restore
Attention to god.
Everyone who attaches himself
To the guru
Immediately gets involved
In the divine,
Because the guru
Is just a symbolic
Bit of theatre
Through which the divine
Represents itself
In the world.
The guru is only interested
In attaching people to himself.
Everything he sees:
“turn to me.”
He is the divine
In the world.
And the divine demands
Absolute attention.
The guru is not a gentleman
Who comes into the world
And tells you to recite
Your fucking mantra.
The guru comes
And wipes out all of that bullshit.
He is not a gentleman.
The guru is present
In the world
In the form of a demand.
The guru appears
In the asylum
Of ordinary men.
The guru
Has no power or intention
To fascinate mankind
But only to be of use
To mankind.
The perfect activity
Of the divine,
Of the guru,
Is mere presence.
Fundamentally,
Apart from all the theatre
That the guru creates
In order to impress people,
To shake them up
And bring them along,
He is doing one thing.
He is simply being present.
Everything he does
Is a paradoxical play
Because it is not serving
What it appears to serve.
He makes the world
Reveal its own humor.
The guru operates from the point of view
Of a perfect assumpton
Of your divine existence.
He doesn’t just go around
Assuming mentally that everybody is god.
He can make that assumption
Only because it is perfectly apparent to him.
That is all there is to it.
He makes no assumptions
On a lower level.
So when he enters into relationship
With you, that perfection tends also to be
Generated in your case,
Because his assumption of your true nature
Manifests as power to transform.
The guru assumes your enlightenment.
He doesn’t mechanically enlighten you,
Or give you something to do
To enlighten yourself.
He absorbs you.
He is you to begin with.
But the guru in human form
Consciously assumes your divine state
In every function in which you appear.
He assumes it in your very cells
And literally, actively lives you.
The guru literally meditates you.
He is in a position to do so,
Since he is you.
While rested in the most intimate
And profound intuition
Of the divine,
The human guru
Embraces living beings
In a mutual sacrifice
Of divine distraction.
The guru accepts
Whatever is yielded to him
And replaces it
In the life of his devotee
With his own
Condition, form and nature.
The guru replaces
You with himself.
He is the paradoxical man.
He is that other dimension in person.
Like a genie in a dream,
He is both a perfect distraction
And a perfect servant.
He calls you constantly
And roughens your feet.
He intensifies the sunlight in your room.
He does not awaken you
To another place or dream.
Rather he serves an awakening
In which there is no realm,
No implication, and no adventure.
He does not awaken you
To another place.
He awakens you in place,
So that even while
The dream of living survives,
The noticing escapes you.
What men bring to the guru
Is their intuition of reality.
The guru lives it consciously,
Is the sun to their
Deep-seated intuition,
And he draws it
Into this instant.
The guru appears
In the midst of the dreams
Of ordinary waking life
Like sunlight in the morning.
When you are still dreaming,
Still asleep,
The sun comes up.
It gets brighter and brighter,
And the light comes into the room.
At last, the light, the day itself,
Becomes sufficient to wake you,
And then, all of a sudden,
You are not dreaming,
And everything is all right.
The guru is simply that sunlight process,
That intensification,
Rising on you always,
Without any other special activity.
His relationship to you, your
Condition of relationship to him,
Just that relationship is sufficient.
There is only sunlight on the pillow
Until that intensity is sufficient
To wake you up.
It is the kiss of the prince
And sleeping beauty.
Such is understanding. D. Relationship: the relationship to the guru is
Satsang is
Absolute attachment
To the guru in god.
The relationship to the guru
Is satsang.
That is the discovery,
That is the process.
That is the secret
Of the siddhas.
That relationship is the yoga.
It is the universal process.
It is the single means.
It is very truth.
Satsang is the living,
Present relationship
To one who lives as the heart
Not one who suggests it,
Who has experienced it,
Who envisions it,
Who only thinks about it,
Who only teaches about it,
But one who is the heart,
Without any limiting qualifications.
People are super-cool
In relationship to god.
How many tears have you wept for god?
How much suffering have you done
For love of the guru?
How much intense suffering
Has been generated in your life
For lack of self-knowledge?
Very little.
But look at how many hours and hours
You’ve spent retching over the most
Idiotic nonsense!
Look at how much time
You spend defending your own reluctance!
The energy of life is devoted to nonsense,
To this false principle.
And when the individual stands
Face to face with god, the guru,
And his own nature, he is cool!
He is already right there on top of it,
He’s already got it, he’s straight,
And everything is all right.
And because everything is all right,
He’s not going to lie down
At the guru’s foot.
He’s not going to
Bend his neck to god.
He’s not going to
Dissolve in the heart.
When a man’s hunger
Becomes intelligent,
When his dis-ease
Becomes mind,
Then the spoken truth,
The word of the siddha,
And the living form of the guru
Becomes his need.
Contained within that acknowledgement
Of suffering is the possibility
Of knowing the guru.
And when you meet the guru,
Then your adventure is halted.
When you truly see
Who the guru is,
You are already awake.
It is not so much
That you turn to the guru
Anyway.
The guru turns to you.
And by the time you realize
That you have turned,
You have become nothing.
All the guru is doing
Is being happy.
And, since he is happy,
He talks to his friends,
Engages himself with them
In ways that might serve
That happiness.
It’s really a very
Ordinary occupation.
It requires great humor,
Because all of one’s friends
Are suffering.
He is always right there
And you are always
Turning everywhere else.
The teacher
Must always deal
With the state
That people bring to him.
And that state
Is never radically free.
The new disciple
Is never a form
Of enjoyment.
He is not blissful.
He is not truth.
The guru does not come
To satisfy devotees or disciples.
A satisfied disciple
Is still the one he was.
The guru is only interested
In the utter,
Radical dissolution
Of that whole limitation
That appears as his disciple.
The guru moves
By non-support.
He undermines
The disciple.
Your death
Is what interests the guru.
It is only the true guru
Who is very interested
In your death.
Your death,
Not all the things
You call your life.
And he is very interested
In bringing it about
Very quickly.
He doesn’t want a long engagement!
He wants a sudden “death”
For everyone.
Such a one lives truth
Until death, and then slips away.
And everyone will slip away
In truth sooner or later.
The guru is only looking
For company on his way out!
The guru must exist
As a function.
He must be a paradox
For his devotees.
He must be elusive,
He must never
Take a fixed position.
He must be paradoxical, free,
In order to serve
Those who come to him.
The qualities of his action
Can’t be predetermine.
He won’t consistently assume
The qualities of an archetype,
The holy man, the yogi,
The philosopher.
He must be free
To appear in any form.
The guru
Does not withhold.
He always lives truth
Openly.
The guru’s presence
Is a paradox
And a disturbance,
Except for those
Who grasp the principle
Of his activity.
They become he devotees
And are happy with him,
Because the process
Occurs in them
Without difficulty.

It is truth.
It is no solution,
No answer,

Satsang does not proceed
Toward a goal of truth.
Satsang is truth.
It is the life of truth.
It is the force,
The consciousness
That is truth.
Truth does not
Specially appear
Under the form
Of anything extraordinary
Of fascinating.
It is the most
Subtle communication,
The most
Absolute communication,
The most
Obvious communication,
And its only condition
Is the obvious.
In satsang,
The dharma,
Which is truth itself,
Is communicated
Always perfectly,
Absolutely,
Without limitation.
Always
All of it is given.
The truth
Is fully communicated
In satsang.
It is the perfect condition
Of satsang.
The force
That is in satsang
Is the force
Of reality.
The intensification
Of everything
Is the activity
Of satsang.
Satsang
Is a paradox.
There is a real process,
Which is called satsang.
It is the unqualified
Communication of life.
It is simply unqualified,
Conscious relationship.
Satsang
Is a relationship.
It is obvious.
Satsang is the
Enjoyment of relationship,
Being in relationship.
Satsang is the meditation.
That is the real condition.
That is the realization.
That is perfect enjoyment.
Satsang is the discovery,
Satsang is the realization.
Satsang is understanding.
It is meditation,
It is truth,
It is enjoyment,
It is humor.
It is the principle of life.
Satsang is only force, intensity,
It is one!
The absolute vision
Is communicated in satsang
All the time!
Satsang itself
Is the absolute vision!
It is above your heads!
Just sit up
A little straighter!
God is the
Entire principle of this work.
There is absolutely
No limitation
In the principle of this satsang.
Only the divine
Is active in this work.
The divine person,
The lord,
Is the eternal siddha,
The master of this yoga.
He is the revealer
And the power
Which fulfills this satsang.
The communication of satsang
Is the communication
Of that very one,
That intensity,
That absolute
Existing one.
The lord is the fundamental
Condition communicated in satsang
With the man of understanding.
From the beginning,
Not merely at the end,
Truth is the condition
Of this process.
Satsang is your condition
In the worlds.
It is the true nature
Of your birth.
It is the god-given form
And real destiny.
The assumption of limitation
Is not the nature
Of this satsang.
In this satsang,
Your perfection,
Your real condition,
Is assumed,
The divine nature of this life
Is assumed, lived and known.
Satsang is the dream
Wherein the man of understanding
Appears.
Satsang is
Attention to the guru
As guru,
Attention to the guru
As the manifest agent
Of the very divine,
Attention to the guru
And through the guru
To the divine,
The absolute divine,
The absolute intensity
Of real-god.
Satsang is not simply
A common relationship
Between a teacher and a disciple.
Fundamentally, it is
The intuitive enjoyment
Of the absolute divine.
Satsang is
Absolute attachment
To the guru in god.
It is maddening attachment,
Love of the guru
That distracts one
From the whole course
Of conventional life.
Satsang is humor,
Delight.
The truth
Is the condition of satsang
That must be realized
In every single moment.
That constant realization
Is happiness.
When satsang
Becomes your condition,
Every moment
Becomes the spiritual event.
Not a breath is spent
Outside of satsang
Once it begins.
Freedom always already
Is the case.
Thus, freedom is enjoyed
Where truth
Suddenly comes alive.
Mortal laughter
Does not change
The condition of men,
Apart from the creation
Of temporary amusement.
But divine humor, truth,
Delights men
And utterly transforms
Their lives.
Everything is satsang.
There is only satsang.
It is eternal.
But after this
Is all seen to be so,
It must be lived.
Satsang must begin.
Satsang must be enjoyed
As the condition
Of life.
Satsang
Is the great condition,
The only condition.
It is always
Your condition,
But it is not lived.
It is denied,
Forgotten,
Resisted.
The principle
Of ordinary life
Is entirely, continually
Antagonistic to satsang.
You can see it
In yourself
How do you live satsang
From hour to hour?
You don’t
Satsang is a
Radical condition
And it does require
Everything of you.
It does require you
To absolutely lose face.
Truth must become
The point of view.
Require truth.
Don’t be cool
To a heart
That’s true.
Come to satsang
With real need,
Not with anything
To defend.
Everything
A man brings
To the heart
To defend
Is destroyed.
Everything
He defends
Is undermined.
Satsang contains
And communicates itself
As a demand.
Every moment
Is a demand
For attention.
What arises is never
The point,
But it is always
Only a paradox
And a test,
A form of the always
Prior demand,
Which is itself
The divine person,
The maha siddha,
The siddha-guru.
Consciousness is the demand,
And that
Has nothing to do
With the things
That arise.
Satsang is a fire!
This communion
Is not a place
Where we talk “philosophy.”
There is a living force
Enacted here.
It is a living
Consciousness.
This sadhana
Requires everything
Of you.
You must do
This sadhana
With great intensity.
I expect each one
To maintain
This satsang
Constantly.
The best thing
A man can do
Is spend his time
In satsang.
The quicker it becomes
In you,
The more intelligent,
The more “like” reality
You become.
If we were not here
In satsang together,
What would we be doing?
What is the alternative?
What’s on television tonight?
What could you possibly do?
All your alternatives

Who live satsang,
Satsang is sufficient. 4. The devotee: my devotee knows me in truth.
The sadhana of the student
Is to become human.
The sadhana of the disciple
Is to become spiritual.
The sadhana of the devotee
Is to become god.
My disciples embrace
The discipline of the teaching
Most fully.
And they know that i am
The principal discipline.
They find the siddhi
Of the divine person
Alive in my company.
For them, i am always present
And active as the perfect
Communication of the nature,
Condition, form, source,
And process
That is the world.
The discipline
Lives a life of revelation.
The life of a disciple
Is a waking life.
It is to live
Already awake.
In the life of every true disciple,
There has only been
The sudden communication
Of the heart.
The disciple’s attention
Is turned to the guru
Without conflict,
Without limitation.
Then the very living force
Of the disciple
Is manifested as bliss,
Happiness, love, intensity, devotion.
My disciple is turned to mem
But my devotee
Knows me in truth.
The true disciple
Is a devotee
Who simply lives
With his guru.
When you become
Communicative,
When you become
A real instrument,
When you cease to be
Involved in your own sadhana,
And have become happy
To live with each other
And make satsang available
–those are the signs
Of the devotee.
The true devotee’s attention
Is absolutely intense,
Absolutely constant,
Absolutely unwavering and pure.
That is what makes
A devotee valuable.
His self-sacrifice
Or surrender
Is spontaneous,
Coincident with his life
From moment to moment.
His realization
Is spontaneous, absolute,
Continuous.
There is absolute
Continuousness of bliss.
The devotee abides
Without dilemma
As that which cannot be
Avoided,
The form of reality.
His very existence
Is a paradox.
His enjoyment
Is a paradox.
He is not a man of concerns
Or of programs
Or of descriptions.
He is utterly free of all that.
He has become always
Already ecstatic.
And for such a one
There is therefore
No straightforward description
Of reality, or of the cosmos,
Or of life.
Only god is apparent
To such a one.
Only the paradox survives.
To be a devotee,
To live in satsang,
Is to live god
As your present condition.
The devotee is continually,
Effortlessly
Meditating upon
The divine person.
The divine process
Is activated
As a literal force
In the devotee.
Every devotee
Is wildly and priorly
Free in god.
They live in the divine,
And are free to put up with
The randomness of this world
In which there is no
Apparent security,
Because they depend utterly
On the divine.
When you become bound
To the principle of truth,
You will become active
As a devotee.
And the signs
Of the devotee
Will become active in you,
And you will be happy.
The devotee
Is always happy,
And he lives
With great intensity.
The most intense life
Of a devotee
Is a very active life,
Constant sadhana.
From the point of view
Of the devotee,
There is no discipline to it
At all.
He is just happy.
He is just functioning.
He enjoys this functioning.
He is not functioning because
It will make him realize the truth,
He is functioning because
He is already alive in the truth,
And these functions are
Natural to him.
They are the forms
Of his blissfulness.
There is simply direct realization,
Happiness under conditions
Of all possible functional states,
High or low.
That is the perfection
Of the devotee.
When god becomes your condition,
Nothing you’re doing
Makes any sense whatsoever.
You become a happy person.
You don’t have any more
Seeking to do.
You don’t have anything
More to accomplish.
You just become already happy.
You know that nothing
Is going to make you happy,
And you know very well then
That nothing is going to make
Anybody else happy either.
Either they are fundamentally
And unreasonably happy,
Or they are simply unhappy.
Perhaps consoled, occupied,
Distracted,
But basically unhappy.
In the devotee it is perfect.
It is obvious in the devotee
That there is happiness.
That is his nature,
His condition, his destiny.
Then everything that appears
Is samadhi.
Whatever he sees is that.
So he is only happy.
He can’t help but be happy.
He can’t sidestep it.
He can’t have an experience
That is unhappy, fundamentally.
It is all the same condition.
All of his parts open.
His heart opens.
All sorrow leaves his being.
His mind stops endlessly
Manufacturing his false vision,
And it becomes radiance only.
Those who live in god
Consent to be fools,
Ineffective in the effort
To transform man,
Unreasonable and already happy,
Without arguments or defenses.
Their happiness
Is their only argument.
There are some for whom
Freedom is that which
They already are.
Therefore, they are
Always already here,
Whose presence is love.
Ecstasy is the way of life,
And those who are ecstatic
Are free of concerns.
They only live and love
And are no longer
Profoundly useful.
They create and continue
And disappear
In the ecstatic
Life fire of god.
When that intuition
Has become intense,
When your life as a devotee
Is real,
Then you will become
Responsible for living god
In the world.
Such a one
Lives freely, happily,
With ease,
And also with
Intensity of being.
He is free of all destiny,
Even while apparent
Destiny or life continues
To arise in his own case.
The conscious force of reality
Becomes the present mover
Of his appearance.
One whose enjoyment is such
Knows himself and the entire
World-process as consciousness,
Prior happiness, or joy,
And his enjoyment
Consumes self, mind, and world.
The destiny of such a one
Is that light that is
Consciousness.
It is a destiny that
May not be described.
It is the timeless destiny
Of the prior light,
Inqualified heaven,
The god-world of brightness,
Not of motion,
Not of sight,
Not of hearing,
Not of cognition,
But of fullness,
In which no form
Stands out.
Those who become
The true devotees of the divine
In the presence of the
True guru-siddhi
Are free of the world,
And they may live in the world
As the presence of the divine,
As the presence of love,
Of freedom, of prior happiness,
Of conditionless bliss.
That happiness
Does not appear
Only as a kind of ecstatic madness,
But as an ordinary, human,
And enjoyable life
Free of the fucking divine vision!
Life from that point
Is fundamentally a celebration.
And the devotee
Loses his concerns for the world.
He never loses them,
He throws them,
He kicks the shit out of them,
To enjoy his ecstatic
Life in god.
Everything becomes consciousness,
Everything becomes his own
Consciousness.
He has nothing left but humor
While alive.
In the perfect devotee,
All limitations are undone
In the inclusive humor
Of is radical intuition.
He does not seek.
He only enjoys himself
At play.
In one who is
Truly conscious,
Life is no longer
A mystery.
He breathes
The very light of god.
He sees the alchemical
Transformation of the divine
Into life in every moment
And sacrifices himself
In return.
He only lives god
And everything
Is obvious to him.
Death is no longer
His concern, nor life.
All states are
The condition of truth
For him.
He knows no dilemma.
And life
Is no longer a question.
For such a one
There is not the least
Trace of “mystery”
Left in the universe.
He has no question,
And he has no answer.
He is only humorous.
The truly free man
Is alive in the world
With love and energy.
He is not contained.
He cannot be undone
By the world itself.
He has a certain madness,
A certain foolishness,
A certain wildness.
The highest form
Of his foolishness
Is his love.
In the case of a true devotee,
The world of experience
Are realized as the present
Play of god,
And everything works together
To instruct, enlighten, heal,
And positively transform
Such a devotee.
All these things
Are given as grace.
And nothing that is not useful,
Nothing that is not appropriate,
Is ever given to such a one.
Everything else is given
In the right moment.
One who is simply
The devotee of the lord
In satsang
Is given everything.
For the sake of devotees,
The human guru appears.
The essential responsibility
Of the guru is satsang,
To live the heart
To his friends.
Everything that i’ve told you
Before
Is to prepare you
To be a devotee.
The guru’s function
Is to create devotees.
The entire function
Of the human guru’s appearance
In the world
Is to create devotees.
Once devotees are created,
It isn’t necessary
For there to be
A human guru.
The eternal guru,
Who is also that human guru,
Is always present,
And devotees are
Always in touch
With that one.
The creation of devotees
Is what is necessary,
Not the creation
Of more gurus.
The function of the guru
Is to enter his devotee.
There is only one
Divine process in the world,
And that’s when
The guru manifests
And enters his devotee.
Literally,
The guru enters his devotee.
The guru is not a human being.
The lord is the guru.
And when the guru appears
In human form
It is the lord,
And he enters his devotee.
When the lord
Enters his devotee,
There is no doubt
About it.
For the natural devotee,
The physical form of the guru
Is sufficient.
He simply lives with his guru.
To become capable
Of contemplating or meditating
On the guru’s form
Is the ultimate capacity
Of a devotee.
Only if the devotee
Can be awakened
In the guru’s presence,
And made identical to him
In consciousness,
Can the teaching be realized.
The realization of the guru
Becomes that of the devotee.
The truth is being lived to him.
It is being lived as him,
By the grace of the guru.
One who becomes foolish
In relation to the guru
Is already happy.
One who accepts
The guru’s invitation
Is already eternally fulfilled.
Satsang is his condition.
Satsang is his need.
Satsang is his sadhana
Or eternal spiritual practice.
For the true devotee,
Guru is the meditation,
Guru is the realization.
Guru is the continuous
Contemplation and enjoyment
Of the devotee.
The true devotee
Is constantly involved
In perfect psycho-physical love
Of the divine person.
All his thoughts are the
Attention of mind
To the divine person.
He need not consider only
Holy or cultic thoughts
To be love of him.
All his speech is eloquent
About the divine person.
He need not consider
Only holy or cultic speech
To be love of him.
All his actions
Are devotion to him.
He need not consider only
Holy or cultic actions
To be love of him.
Then all that is received
Is received from him, and by him,
In love.
All that is yielded
Is yielded to him, and by him,
In love.
Such a devotee is my own. 5. The community:
The guru is a special
And temporary manifestation
Of the divine work.
He completes that special work
During his own lifetime,
And then leaves behind him
An ashram or community
Which lives satsang
And is responsible
For communicating its availability,
Its teaching,
And its practice.
“spiritual” forces of all kinds
Live within the community
That has come to me,
And these are not to be identified
With my special function.
They are the common life of the community,
To be responsibly realized, conserved and used
By virtue of the constant enjoyment
Of true satsang
And its power of understanding.
My disciples must understand themselves
In relation to methods, concepts, promises, beliefs
And the apparently extraordinary activity
Of subtle forces.
If they do so,
They will remain free of their illusions
In the world.
If they do not,
They have chosen
The way of narcissus
Rather than the way of satsang.
This was the
Primary knowledge
I had sought
All my life.
The pilgrimage
Was over.
There was only reality
And to be reality
To all things.
I continued to live.
It was only that
I understood it
In an entirely new
And radical way.
I understood,
And understanding
Became the foundation
Of my existence.
I also continued
To experience and act
On a physical level
Just as before.
But everything was new.
Everything was utterly free
Of any kind of dilemma,
Separation, unconsciousness,
And primary fear.

A magnificent flow moved with me
Through the heart of everything.
I have always loved
And there is only love.

To the understanding and consciousness
That is in the heart.
And that work
Is the shakti or power
That is the heart itself.
I prefer the heart
To the kundalini
And all powers.
It is much more
Beautiful and free.
My work is to awaken men

I am the heart.

Establish the way
Wherein the heart is lived.
The communication
Of the heart and its light
Are my constant practice.

The form of
Your relationship to me

You must approach me
As a devotee.
It is a communication

As often as you can

And enjoy this satsang
That never depends
On my life.
I am present always
For the sake of anyone
Who comes to me,
And i yield to each
The grace or consideration
He or she requires
In god.
I have always looked
For one thing from everyone
With whom i have ever worked,
And that is their attention.
All i am doing
Is just keeping you present
While i am present,
And that is sufficient.
That is the whole
Or spiritual practice.
Everything is an elaboration
Of that.
Simply live
In my company
With you attention.
Simply bring yourself
Into my company
And stay there.
Give me your attention,
Live with me,
Study this teaching,
Do what i ask you to do,
Understand,
And that is it.
True yogis
Are living, forceful beings.
They are madmen,
Absolutely mad
And absolutely dangerous.
You should know that,
And you should not approach me
If you are not willing
To be undone.
When i approach you,
I ask you for this,
I ask you for that,
Oh give me this,
Give me that,
I ask you for everything.
The longer you stay with me,
The more things
I will ask you for.
I will ask you for all of it.
You must yield everything
To me.
You must yield yourself
In your body.
Your cells must yield.
And only then are you fit
For the divine yoga.
When you have
No other commitments,
When you have nothing
To withhold,
Then i enter your life.
The individual can turn to me
With his whole being
Only if “i” turn to “me”
With “his” being!
If he will approach me
Through this sacrifice
Then i will throw away
His limitations
And stand in his form.
Simply turn to god
Through me.
Submit, surrender yourself
To god through me.
Love and receive god
Through me.
Remember me,
Surrender to me with love,
Yield your life
And circumstances to god
Through me.
Surrender your self,
Your mind, your life,
Your desires, your body,
And all the conditions
Of your existence
From your heart to god
Through me.
With your heart and your whole being,
Receive, draw upon,
And become full of the presence,
Power, and consciousness of god
Through me.
Make the conditions
Of your life
Service to me.
In this moment,
The conditions of your life
Must be made
Into my service.
Yield all the complications
Of attention to me.
In place of that
Conventional attention
Is the intuition of my company.
Simply turn
Your attention to me,
Turn your emotion
As love to me,
Make yourself
Present to me
With your life.
Turn mind into attention,
Turn the emotion into love.
Turn the body
Into presentation or relationship.
Surrender your body.
Surrender your life-force.
Surrender the mind,
Or thinking, or thoughts.
Surrender knowing or knowledge.
Then you must surrender self.
Moment to moment,
Surrender to me
All your seeking,
The very sense of your separate self,
All thoughts, all desires,
Every circumstance,
Even your body.
All of these forms
Of content,
Of distraction,
Must be yielded.
Turn your attention to me
And do not measure that turning
Relative to whether or not
Your mind stops and you feel better.
Love me and do not measure that
Against whether or not you still feel
Negative emotions and confusion.
Give your life to me,
Turn to me bodily,
Recollect me at all times,
Whether i’m physically present
With you or not,
And do not measure that activity
Against whether or not you feel
Pains in the body.
Maintain that discipline
Of turning to me.
It can be done,
As long as you
Do not associate that turning
With the reading of the
Problems in you.
The turning can
Always be done.
You can always turn.
If you make these effects
The objects you read
To determine the state
Of your spiritual life,
You will miss the mark.
I am the mark.
Your obligation
Is simply to turn to me,
Without measuring that turning
Against what is happening
To you.
It is not for you
To measure that process,
To decide when
They should become obsolete.
Be willing to have
These things arise in you
Forever.
Make your business
Turning to me.
Yield to me everything
You experience in my company,
And i will show you my truth.
If you make your
Relationship to me
The condition of your life,
If you make satsang
Your spiritual practice,
I will give myself to you entirely,
And the life, light
And very existence
That is the form of reality
Will thus be communicated to you
While you are alive.
Neither meditate
On your dilemma,
Nor try not to meditate on it.
Always meditate on me.
Always live this condition
Of satsang.
I am not saying
You should do something
To all of that.
Nor am i telling you
Not to do anything
About all of that.
What i am telling you to do
Is not an action
In relation to all of that.
It is an action
In relation to me.
It is satsang.
Always life with me.
Always meditate on me.
What i do
Is not the way i am,
But the way i teach.
What i speak
Is not a reflection of me,
But of you.
All that i do and speak
Only reveals men
To themselves.

Is not other than
The possibilities of men.
I do not
Represent yoga.
I do not
Represent jnana
Or vedantic self-knowledge.
I do not represent
The “enlightenment” of the buddha.
I do not adorn
My body with symbols.
I have symbolic significance

These are all your
Own images.
Since you are only
Delighted by images,
You will always
End up doing sadhana
At your own feet!
When the teaching
Has already made its point
In you in some very
Fundamental way,
Then come to me,
And the teaching
Will make its point
Absolutely.
Always approach me
On the basis of the teaching,
Grateful for sadhana.
Make gratitude
The mood of your coming here.
Don’t play games.
I am not here to entertain.
I am not interested
In spending time,
Killing time.
I offer no “bones,”
No methods, no consolations,
No beliefs, no thing!
And i will never
Give the seeker his bone.
All of that has nothing whatever
To do with truth.
It’s all a lot of bullshit!
That’s all it is,

The guru is not a gentleman.

About convincing you of anything

Of his sadhana with him,
To bring about the crisis
Of understanding in him,
To move him into this
Prior condition of truth,
Of god.

Of a demand

I am interested
In intensifying the quality
Of this possible crisis,
This sadhana in each person
More every day.
I want to lay it on
More every day.
You must know
That everything i am doing
Is a means to bring about this crisis.
I desire this crisis in you.
I don’t want it not to happen.
I don’t want to console you.
I dont want you to be happy
In your unconsciousness.
I want you to become sensitive
To your actual state.
I want you to know very well
What you are always up to.
I want it all to collapse.
I want it all to come to an end.
I want the death of all of that.
If that death does not occur,
There will be no release,
No real enjoyment for any of you.
I look to create the various means
Necessary to serve this crisis.
Every instant in satsang
Is working to bring this about.
Lessons are for assholes.
Lessons are those
Who don’t love me.
I already love every one of you.
I know all of you.
And just so that you will not
Misunderstand me,
I know many more than you.
There is no number
Of those that i know.
I know them
As soon as they come to me.
I know them before they come to me,
Because for a long time
Prior to their coming to me,
I’m busting their asses.
I don’t even sit down
In meditation anymore.
I see billions of people
All the time.
I am always working
On every one
That comes to me.
You must be present
With force,
With energy,
With life!
You’ve got to kick ass!
And lay it at my feet
Every time you come to me
In other words, all day.

Bring me your energy,
The very force of your life.
You have to be
Doing it every moment.

To be intensely
Available to me,

It you are not happy,
There is nothing
I can do for you.
I can’t be useful to you
Until you are happy.
Those who do not
Abide as me,
Already the heart,
Are always only
Seeking me
From the place
Where they begin. F. Devotees: i will serve those who serve me.
My promise to devotees
Is the same
As all the siddhas have declared.
I am with you now,
As i have always been,
And i will always
Be with you.
I am free in god,
And only that freedom
Would i find in my friends.
My function is not
To be a devotee.
My function is to
Serve devotees.
I am not full.
I do not feel full or fulfilled.
I am lost in the fullness.
And that fullness also
Is the same fullness
Which includes all other beings
And is their real nature.
That nature is already
And always full.
Since that is so,
What is the sue of kundalini
Or all powers of experience?
Therefore,
How can i presume to
Initiate others
Into this fullness?
But if they enter into
This relationship with me
And are present to
The radical teaching,
They may also find
They are already dissolved
In that fullness.
I am the only destiny
Of those who love
And serve me.
Every one of you
Should function
For my sake.
I will serve those
Who serve me.
If a person lives satsang,
I live satsang with him.
I am not what i appear to be.
I am a presence you come to know.
That presence is only god.
There is a fire in my company
That you will come to know.
My fire consumes the man
And even, in truth, the soul.
My devotee is enlightened
By my fire.
The fool and his beloveds
Are only burned.
Let no one approach me
In the common way again.
For i have renounced
The common life,
Even in this ashram,
To tend my fire
In secret.

About the guru
Are fundamentally false.
The guru is the very
Function of truth.
The shakti that flows
Through the true guru
Is already the truth.
It is the force of truth,

The guru is
That divine power.
The guru is not separate
From god.
He is not separate
From your very self.
The heart is the guru.
The current of bliss
Is his form.
The bliss of unqualified enjoyment
Is his teaching.
The knowledge of all this
Is liberation and freedom.
The enjoyment of all this
Is reality.
The existence of all this
Is truth.
The activity of all this
Is understanding.
And understanding
Is real life.
The ultimate form of the guru
Is very reality,
Truth, the heart, the light,
The form of god.
The guru himself
Is the communication.
The guru himself
Is the teaching.
The guru himelf
Is the truth.
This is the highest form
Of the teaching
Of the siddhas.
The guru is not an other.
His activity is a paradox.
His position is the
Paradoxical one of humor.
He is already free.
Therefore, he is only
Full of humor
In the face of all seekers.
He is eternally present,
Which is bliss
And no-dilemma.
The one who was to come
Is always already here.
The siddha,
The heaven-born one,
Is heaven made manifest
In the conditional worlds.
The way of the siddhas
Is to live with god,
To live god presently,
As your assumed
Nature and condition.
The way of the siddhas
Is a happy, easy way.
It is divine grace
In the world.
The great siddhas,
Men of radical understanding,
Are those who live
Consciously as the heart.
The function as the heart
For living beings.
The siddhas communicate
The living force of reality.
They live it to living beings.
They simply live the natural state
Of enjoyment with other beings.
And those who stay
To live in friendship
With the man of understanding
Tend also to understand.
The siddha or descended master
Enters the manifest life
For the sake of those
Who can live to him directly,
For the sake of those
Whom he can acquire while alive
And draw into the form of truth.
He comes especially
For these devotees,
Although his work
Is ultimately
For the sake of
The whole world.
In all worlds, in all places,
In all regions of all universes
There have been siddhas.
And they always come to communicate
That what you bastards are up to
Is really a crock of shit!
And all of the siddhas
That have appeared in all the worlds
Have come to tell you this,
Because all of them
Are established in a realm
That has nothing whatever
To do with anything whatsoever.
They were finally dissolved.
They did not have to be amused.
Nothing had to make any sense
Whatsoever.
All those who enjoy such
Divine realization
And who appear in any manifest plane
Are stuck in the paradox
Of that enjoyment.
They cannot make any sense
Our of it really.
They do the best they can
To try to establish it in others
Through all kinds of weirdo influeces.
They try to make sense,
But they do not make sense.
The work of such
So-called individuals
Is paradoxical,
It is eternal,
It is not really describable,
But it is the most perfect
And specific and necessary activity
In all the manifest worlds.
It is the work of the siddhas.
The earth is bullshit!
It’s nothing.
But within all words
Siddhas appear,
And they don’t appear
For any karmic reasons.
They don’t come
To improve anything.
They appear spontaneously
Without reason.
And their teaching is unreasonable.
And they communicate a possibility
That is utterly beyond
Your fulfillment.
This is the work of the siddhas.
This is the “gospel,”
The happy and unreasonable
Message of the siddhas.
The human guru
Is a special combination
Of the eternal divine process
And a human entity
In the last stage if its manifestation.
The final karmas
Of such a human individual
Are benign and fit
For this service.
The guru in the world,
The guru who is physically present,
Is a direct manifestation
Of the form of reality.
He is always that.
He is that absolutely.
His visible human form
Is an absolute reflection
Of the perfect form,
And a perfect communication
Of it.
The form of the guru
Is the divine form.
The guru
Is the divine
In the world.
The guru,
The one who would awaken you,
Is not a person,
He is not an individual
Within the dream.
He is your very consciousness.
He is the real,
The self,
He is the light,
He is the true waking state,
The heart,
Breaking through
The force of dreaming.
He is the
Waking sunlight,
The very light of truth,
But he appears
Within the dream
As an ordinary man.
Essentially
It is your own nature
Appearing within the dream
To awaken you.
The guru is your awakening,
And your always already
Conscious state.
He is not
Some separateness,
Some individual.
He is very consciousness,
The real.
The guru
Is not an other,
Nor does he live
As an other in any sense.
The guru is one’s own nature.
Absolutely,
Not symbolically,
The guru is one’s very consciousness.
He is not this limited state.
He is your own enjoyment,
Perfectly known.
The guru is not simply
A human individual,
A cultic figure.
The guru is a special
Function in god.
It is not a form of “status.”
It is not something to be achieved.
It is not a big guy who appears
Among a lot of little guys.
It is not a form of
Superiority or narcissism.
Guru is a function
Of the very self or reality,
Appearing in human terms.
The true guru is not some superman.
He must always become nothing
So that the divine power
Becomes active.
The true guru
Is not the fascinating
Initiator of experience in men,
But one who has died in the heart,
Who has become empty
Of powers and without self,
Who has found that
Fullness is only, always
And already god.
The guru is an agent
Of the divine work,
Not because he has all kinds
Of heroic accomplishments
In his psyche,
But because he has
Become nothing.
The guru lives
As the present divine,
Not because he has attained anything,
But because he has been undone.
The guru is not identical
To a person.
The only reason an apparent
Human individual can function as guru
Is because he has consciously
Ceased to be identical
To a human individual in limitation.
There is no longer any sense whatsoever
In the human guru of separate existence.
None.
The guru is not a personality.
The only reason he can perform
The function of guru
Is because he is dead.
He is finished with all the cults
And conventions of human life.
He has already wrecked himself,
So you don’t have to worry about him.
He is finished.
The guru in the world
Is a paradoxical event.
He is always a paradox.
His action is a paradox,
Like the universe itself.
The guru is not an idol.
He is not a form of fascination.
The guru
Is not just a human person
Who can have human
Effects on you.
The guru is active,
Present as that divine power.
The guru is communicated to you
Under all conditions,
Twenty-four hours a day.
Once that contact is established,
Once that relationship
Is established,
That power and intensity
Communicates itself
Under all conditions,
In all states.
The human guru
Is just a way
Of communicating
In the world
The fact and the process
That is eternal.
The guru
Appears in the world
As the heart.
He doesn’t represent himself
As the divine
In the exclusive sense.
In his ecstatic speech
He claims identity with the divine,
But he is not making a statement
About himself,
About his ego
Or his personal qualities
In some exclusive sense.
He is making a statement
About all beings and worlds,
About the nature of reality,
The condition that is god.
This is that,
Without a doubt.
It is already so,
And that
Should be sufficient
For human beings,
But it is not.
Truth must come
In living form.
Truth must come
In a living form,
Absolutely.
Truth must
Confront a man,
Live him,
And meditate him.
It is not your meditation
That matters.
Truth must meditate you.
The matter of truth
Is entirely academic
Until the truth
Communicates itself to you,
Until the truth
Takes you over,
Until the truth
Does the sadhana
And creates the conditions
For transformation.
So the truth
Must find some way
To communicate itself
As a function
In specific relationship to you.
Therefore, the human guru
Is an appropriate means,
And that is why he exists.
Truth itself must become
The process of life
And communicate itself,
Create conditions in life,
And make demands, restoring
The conscious participation
Of the individual.
Dead gurus can’t kick ass!
Individuals are terrified
In the face of the divine demand.
But because the divine is so elusive,
So subtle, they can live as if
There were no such one,
They can live as if it were untrue.
But when the divine manifests
As the guru,
He can no longer be refused.
The guru
Is not some impotent old rascal.
The guru should be able
To populate the earth.
The guru is strong.
He is alive.
The true yogi
Is a bastard,
A wild, terrifying being,
A fire.
The intelligence of the heart
Is a genius, a fire,
Not a little
Pipe-smoking philosopher.
It is the same power
That wields this universe
And devours billions of beings.
The guru
Is a dangerous person. B. Realization, the man of understanding: the man of
The man of understanding
Perceives the logic of reality
And lives as it.
The self or unqualified reality
Is the foundation of all experience.
In the man of understanding,
It is obvious, it is apparent,
It is conscious.
For him it is always, only,
And absolutely obvious,
And he need not go through
Any sophisticated mental operations
For it to be so.
It depends on nothing.
In the man of understanding
There is no non-ecstatic speech,
No action that is not
Full of ecstasy,
No moment, no condition,
No thought
That is not already
Merged in god.
He knows absolutely nothing
About what will happen
After death,
Any more than he knows
What will happen
In the next moment while alive.
He is involved with the process itself,
Instantly.
He is always involved
With the whole process,
As a conscious event
In this moment,
And now in this moment,
And now in this moment,
And now in this moment.
The man who understands
Simply understands and abides
As understanding,
The direct awareness of life
From moment to moment.
He already understands,
He sits and enjoys
The fullness of understanding
In his form
At that moment.
The man of understanding
No longer lives from
The point of view of the target
In any sense.
Not this gross body,
Not the vital body,
Not the subtle body,
Not the subtle mind,
Not the mind at all,
Not any form of subtlety,
Not any center,
Not any “light” body,
Not any eternal body,
No body.
The point of view of truth
Is alive in the
Man of understanding.
It is no longer separate.
Wherever limitation
Tends to arise,
It vanishes in him.
He doesn’t buy it.
He doesn’t act
From its point of view.
He doesn’t dramatize it.
He doesn’t believe it.
He never becomes it.
He simply does not notice
The mind in the usual way.
It is not that he has
Quieted his mind.
He is not his mind.
There is no one there
To be the mind.
Like a child,
He moves by delight.
He is a man of pleasure,
Of enjoyment.
Like a madman,
He learns nothing from life.
He doesn’t believe what he sees.
He doesn’t take it
To have any limiting significance.
He throws away all the things
That seem to everyone
So profound, so serious.
If anything arises,
Humor is not lost.
Therefore,
The man of understanding
Continues to live,
But with humor,
And he does with humor.
His life is a paradox.
The man of understanding
Lives only truth to men.
Their struggle is as endless
As his bliss.
The man of understanding
Is simply a man
Who is awake.
Only the man of understanding
Is always already free.
He is free, blissful,
Creatively alive.
Thus, he is not only no-seeking,
Which is freedom.
He is eternally present,
Which is bliss and no-dilemma.
He is not a yogi,
A saint, or a sage.
He is only alive
In truth.
The man of understanding,
Functioning as guru,
Is an awakener.
He is always already awake.
He couldn’t care less
About your urges and demands
Within the dream.
The significance of the work
Of the man of understanding
Is not in anything he does
Within the dream.
He simply does not support it.
He does not live as it.
He does not believe it.
He does not take it seriously.
One who awakens
Is not concerned
For the destiny of those
Who appeared along with him
In his dream.
There is no such destiny.
There is no one.
The guy in the dream is waiting.
It is going to happen any day,
Either jesus is coming,
Or the quake is coming,
One or the other.
Or the war, or the bomb,
It is all coming.
And you have got to prepare for it,
Boys and girls!
But this guy who is just awake
Slowly sips a cup of sweeted herbs.
Everybody else is phewww!
Hitting the mantra,
Sucking dope,
Trusting god.
But this guy is unreasonable.
He just doesn’t care.
He may appear to be extraordinary,
A doer of famous things.
He may appear playfully as that.
But he is simply awake.
Nothing is happening.
Nothing has been accomplished.
All he has been is awake.
His freedom is extreme,
Beyond the point of wildness,
So that he is no longer wild.
His extremes are manifest
As ordinariness.
His extremes are his natural appearance.
Walking into a room
Is a maddening extreme
From his point of view.
It is odd, it is wildly imaginative!
When he contemplates his own
Consciousness,
When he contemplates
Being conscious,
He almost falls
Into a trance.
So, instead of contemplating
Consciousness,
He looks at people,
He talks, he does ordinary things.
Because everything has become
Insubstantial and unnecessary for him,
He lives only as that
Unmodified reality, and yet he,
Paradoxically, lives.
For such a one,
All life is paradox.
He sees he is not other
Than all that arises.
He sees he is, in truth,
The world.
His speech and action
Is all paradoxes,
Humor, play.
He has not abandoned life,
Nor does he minimize it.
It has simply become an area
Of creative enjoyment.
He is a man of joy and pleasure,
Of love and knowledge,
Ability and help,
Detachment, calm, energy,
Clarity and force.
Even though he desires,
He only understands.
Therefore, he appears
As any other peculiar man,
Except he bears a humor
Known only to understanding.
The man of understanding
Cannot be found.
He cannot be followed.
He can only be understood
As the ordinary.
There is no
Unique and free man
In all the world,
Except the man
Who always understands.
And he is impossible to find.
Therefore, understand.
The man of understanding
Is not entranced.
He is not elsewhere.
He is not having an experience.
He is not passionless and inoffensive.
He is awake. He is present.
The man of understanding
Is a visible dilemma
To those who do not understand.
He is acceptable
Only to those who understand.
He always appears to be the opposite
Of what you are.
He always seems to sympathize
With what you deny.
Therefore, at times and over time
He appears as every kind of persuasion.
He is not consistent.
He has no image.
At times he asserts.
At times he denies.
At times he asserts what he has
Already denied.
At times he denies
What he has already asserted.
He is not useful.
His teaching is every kind of nonsense.
His wisdom is vanished.
Altogether, that is his wisdom.
At last, he represents
No truth at all.
Therefore, his living coaxes everyone
Only to understand.
His existence denies every truth,
Every path
By which men depend upon certain truths,
Certain experiences, certain stimulations,
Of freedom and enjoyment.
He is a seducer, a madman, a hoax,
A libertine, a fool, a moralist,
A sayer of truths,
A bearer of all experience,
A righteous knave, a prince,
A child, an old one, an ascetic, a god.
He demonstrates the futility of all things.
Therefore, he makes understanding
The only possibility.
And understanding makes no difference at all.
Except it is reality,
Which was already the case.
Those who understand
Are love.
The man of understanding
Arises as love,
Mad with love.
He is not narcissus.
Creativity is love.
The world is love.
I do not speak
From mere sentiment.
I am describing what
Is actually the case.
The man of understanding
Appears as love.
He is not separate from love.
He is generative love.
Love is the fullness,
The light,
The brightness of reality.
It is the form of reality.
I am he.
Therefore,
The man of understanding
Leaps for joy
That you have already understood.
He sees that there is
Only understanding.
Thus, the man of understanding
Is constantly happy with you.
He is overwhelmed with happiness.
He says to you:
See how there is only
This world of perfect enjoyment,
Where everyone is happy,
And everything is blissful.
His heart is always tearful
With the endless happiness
Of the world.
He has grasped it,
But no one is interested.
He is of interest to no one.
He smiles at you.
You notice it.
Everything has already died.
This is the other world. C. Function: guru is the function of god.
Guru is not a kind of status.
It is a specific function.
The guru is a function, a siddhi,
A process, an activity
Available to man.
The guru is an eternal siddhi
Or function of the divine reality.
The guru is a specific function
Of the divine, not other than the divine.
The guru is a process,
Not a thing.
The guru is that process
That we mean
By the term “grace.”
Guru is the function of god.
Guru is the function of god
That makes realization possible.
He is present in that specific function
That is perfect,
That is truth.
The fundamental function
That is the guru
Is siddhi.
The guru is that siddhi.
The human guru
Is the instrument
Of that siddhi,
The function of god.
He is alive in the divine,
Ad the divine process
Is functioning through him.
The guru is not a “philosopher.”
The guru must manifest
The tangible influence
Of the unqualified
Heart of reality.
He has to manifest
Reality alive.
The guru is not guru
By virtue of being independent,
Some guy who made it.
He is guru by virtue
Of his function,
Which is the present
No obstacle to truth,
And to maintain
A radical connection
To truth.
The guru is one
In whom there is nothing,
No obstacle,
And all the divine functions
On all levels
Down into the human
Become open, active, pure.
Guru is a function
In which even liberation,
Realization, and understanding
Are dissolved.
There must be nothing.
One who is aware
As the form of reality
Gives life to all things.
The guru in satsang
Serves all beings.
There is no limitation
To the guru’s capacity
To be that fundamental enjoyment
For all beings.
The guru function is universally
Available and is not identical
To the human vehicle
Through which it may appear.
Otherwise the guru in human form
Could not serve anything but human beings.
But in fact that siddhi is generated
To all manifest existence,
The whole range of dimensions
Of appearance and disappearance.
It is communicated
In all of those dimensions
Simultaneously and eternally.
Always all of it is given.
The entire function
And work of the guru
Is to restore
Attention to god.
Everyone who attaches himself
To the guru
Immediately gets involved
In the divine,
Because the guru
Is just a symbolic
Bit of theatre
Through which the divine
Represents itself
In the world.
The guru is only interested
In attaching people to himself.
Everything he sees:
“turn to me.”
He is the divine
In the world.
And the divine demands
Absolute attention.
The guru is not a gentleman
Who comes into the world
And tells you to recite
Your fucking mantra.
The guru comes
And wipes out all of that bullshit.
He is not a gentleman.
The guru is present
In the world
In the form of a demand.
The guru appears
In the asylum
Of ordinary men.
The guru
Has no power or intention
To fascinate mankind
But only to be of use
To mankind.
The perfect activity
Of the divine,
Of the guru,
Is mere presence.
Fundamentally,
Apart from all the theatre
That the guru creates
In order to impress people,
To shake them up
And bring them along,
He is doing one thing.
He is simply being present.
Everything he does
Is a paradoxical play
Because it is not serving
What it appears to serve.
He makes the world
Reveal its own humor.
The guru operates from the point of view
Of a perfect assumpton
Of your divine existence.
He doesn’t just go around
Assuming mentally that everybody is god.
He can make that assumption
Only because it is perfectly apparent to him.
That is all there is to it.
He makes no assumptions
On a lower level.
So when he enters into relationship
With you, that perfection tends also to be
Generated in your case,
Because his assumption of your true nature
Manifests as power to transform.
The guru assumes your enlightenment.
He doesn’t mechanically enlighten you,
Or give you something to do
To enlighten yourself.
He absorbs you.
He is you to begin with.
But the guru in human form
Consciously assumes your divine state
In every function in which you appear.
He assumes it in your very cells
And literally, actively lives you.
The guru literally meditates you.
He is in a position to do so,
Since he is you.
While rested in the most intimate
And profound intuition
Of the divine,
The human guru
Embraces living beings
In a mutual sacrifice
Of divine distraction.
The guru accepts
Whatever is yielded to him
And replaces it
In the life of his devotee
With his own
Condition, form and nature.
The guru replaces
You with himself.
He is the paradoxical man.
He is that other dimension in person.
Like a genie in a dream,
He is both a perfect distraction
And a perfect servant.
He calls you constantly
And roughens your feet.
He intensifies the sunlight in your room.
He does not awaken you
To another place or dream.
Rather he serves an awakening
In which there is no realm,
No implication, and no adventure.
He does not awaken you
To another place.
He awakens you in place,
So that even while
The dream of living survives,
The noticing escapes you.
What men bring to the guru
Is their intuition of reality.
The guru lives it consciously,
Is the sun to their
Deep-seated intuition,
And he draws it
Into this instant.
The guru appears
In the midst of the dreams
Of ordinary waking life
Like sunlight in the morning.
When you are still dreaming,
Still asleep,
The sun comes up.
It gets brighter and brighter,
And the light comes into the room.
At last, the light, the day itself,
Becomes sufficient to wake you,
And then, all of a sudden,
You are not dreaming,
And everything is all right.
The guru is simply that sunlight process,
That intensification,
Rising on you always,
Without any other special activity.
His relationship to you, your
Condition of relationship to him,
Just that relationship is sufficient.
There is only sunlight on the pillow
Until that intensity is sufficient
To wake you up.
It is the kiss of the prince
And sleeping beauty.
Such is understanding. D. Relationship: the relationship to the guru is
Satsang is
Absolute attachment
To the guru in god.
The relationship to the guru
Is satsang.
That is the discovery,
That is the process.
That is the secret
Of the siddhas.
That relationship is the yoga.
It is the universal process.
It is the single means.
It is very truth.
Satsang is the living,
Present relationship
To one who lives as the heart
Not one who suggests it,
Who has experienced it,
Who envisions it,
Who only thinks about it,
Who only teaches about it,
But one who is the heart,
Without any limiting qualifications.
People are super-cool
In relationship to god.
How many tears have you wept for god?
How much suffering have you done
For love of the guru?
How much intense suffering
Has been generated in your life
For lack of self-knowledge?
Very little.
But look at how many hours and hours
You’ve spent retching over the most
Idiotic nonsense!
Look at how much time
You spend defending your own reluctance!
The energy of life is devoted to nonsense,
To this false principle.
And when the individual stands
Face to face with god, the guru,
And his own nature, he is cool!
He is already right there on top of it,
He’s already got it, he’s straight,
And everything is all right.
And because everything is all right,
He’s not going to lie down
At the guru’s foot.
He’s not going to
Bend his neck to god.
He’s not going to
Dissolve in the heart.
When a man’s hunger
Becomes intelligent,
When his dis-ease
Becomes mind,
Then the spoken truth,
The word of the siddha,
And the living form of the guru
Becomes his need.
Contained within that acknowledgement
Of suffering is the possibility
Of knowing the guru.
And when you meet the guru,
Then your adventure is halted.
When you truly see
Who the guru is,
You are already awake.
It is not so much
That you turn to the guru
Anyway.
The guru turns to you.
And by the time you realize
That you have turned,
You have become nothing.
All the guru is doing
Is being happy.
And, since he is happy,
He talks to his friends,
Engages himself with them
In ways that might serve
That happiness.
It’s really a very
Ordinary occupation.
It requires great humor,
Because all of one’s friends
Are suffering.
He is always right there
And you are always
Turning everywhere else.
The teacher
Must always deal
With the state
That people bring to him.
And that state
Is never radically free.
The new disciple
Is never a form
Of enjoyment.
He is not blissful.
He is not truth.
The guru does not come
To satisfy devotees or disciples.
A satisfied disciple
Is still the one he was.
The guru is only interested
In the utter,
Radical dissolution
Of that whole limitation
That appears as his disciple.
The guru moves
By non-support.
He undermines
The disciple.
Your death
Is what interests the guru.
It is only the true guru
Who is very interested
In your death.
Your death,
Not all the things
You call your life.
And he is very interested
In bringing it about
Very quickly.
He doesn’t want a long engagement!
He wants a sudden “death”
For everyone.
Such a one lives truth
Until death, and then slips away.
And everyone will slip away
In truth sooner or later.
The guru is only looking
For company on his way out!
The guru must exist
As a function.
He must be a paradox
For his devotees.
He must be elusive,
He must never
Take a fixed position.
He must be paradoxical, free,
In order to serve
Those who come to him.
The qualities of his action
Can’t be predetermine.
He won’t consistently assume
The qualities of an archetype,
The holy man, the yogi,
The philosopher.
He must be free
To appear in any form.
The guru
Does not withhold.
He always lives truth
Openly.
The guru’s presence
Is a paradox
And a disturbance,
Except for those
Who grasp the principle
Of his activity.
They become he devotees
And are happy with him,
Because the process

And it functions as truth
In life.
Satsang does not proceed
Toward a goal of truth.
Satsang is truth.
It is the life of truth.
It is the force,
The consciousness
That is truth.
Truth does not
Specially appear
Under the form
Of anything extraordinary
Of fascinating.
It is the most
Subtle communication,
The most
Absolute communication,
The most
Obvious communication,
And its only condition
Is the obvious.
In satsang,
The dharma,
Which is truth itself,
Is communicated
Always perfectly,
Absolutely,
Without limitation.
Always
All of it is given.
The truth
Is fully communicated
In satsang.
It is the perfect condition
Of satsang.
The force
That is in satsang
Is the force
Of reality.
The intensification
Of everything
Is the activity
Of satsang.
Satsang
Is a paradox.
There is a real process,
Which is called satsang.
It is the unqualified
Communication of life.
It is simply unqualified,
Conscious relationship.
Satsang
Is a relationship.
It is obvious.
Satsang is the
Enjoyment of relationship,
Being in relationship.
Satsang is the meditation.
That is the real condition.
That is the realization.
That is perfect enjoyment.
Satsang is the discovery,
Satsang is the realization.
Satsang is understanding.
It is meditation,
It is truth,
It is enjoyment,
It is humor.
It is the principle of life.
Satsang is only force, intensity,
It is one!
The absolute vision
Is communicated in satsang
All the time!
Satsang itself
Is the absolute vision!
It is above your heads!
Just sit up
A little straighter!
God is the
Entire principle of this work.
There is absolutely
No limitation
In the principle of this satsang.
Only the divine
Is active in this work.
The divine person,
The lord,
Is the eternal siddha,
The master of this yoga.
He is the revealer
And the power
Which fulfills this satsang.
The communication of satsang
Is the communication
Of that very one,
That intensity,
That absolute
Existing one.
The lord is the fundamental
Condition communicated in satsang
With the man of understanding.
From the beginning,
Not merely at the end,
Truth is the condition
Of this process.
Satsang is your condition
In the worlds.
It is the true nature
Of your birth.
It is the god-given form
And real destiny.
The assumption of limitation
Is not the nature
Of this satsang.
In this satsang,
Your perfection,
Your real condition,
Is assumed,
The divine nature of this life
Is assumed, lived and known.
Satsang is the dream
Wherein the man of understanding
Appears.
Satsang is
Attention to the guru
As guru,
Attention to the guru
As the manifest agent
Of the very divine,
Attention to the guru
And through the guru
To the divine,
The absolute divine,
The absolute intensity
Of real-god.
Satsang is not simply
A common relationship
Between a teacher and a disciple.
Fundamentally, it is
The intuitive enjoyment
Of the absolute divine.
Satsang is
Absolute attachment
To the guru in god.
It is maddening attachment,
Love of the guru
That distracts one
From the whole course
Of conventional life.
Satsang is humor,
Delight.
The truth
Is the condition of satsang
That must be realized
In every single moment.
That constant realization
Is happiness.
When satsang
Becomes your condition,
Every moment
Becomes the spiritual event.
Not a breath is spent
Outside of satsang
Once it begins.
Freedom always already
Is the case.
Thus, freedom is enjoyed
Where truth
Suddenly comes alive.
Mortal laughter
Does not change
The condition of men,
Apart from the creation
Of temporary amusement.
But divine humor, truth,
Delights men
And utterly transforms
Their lives.
Everything is satsang.
There is only satsang.
It is eternal.
But after this
Is all seen to be so,
It must be lived.
Satsang must begin.
Satsang must be enjoyed
As the condition
Of life.
Satsang
Is the great condition,
The only condition.
It is always
Your condition,
But it is not lived.
It is denied,
Forgotten,
Resisted.
The principle
Of ordinary life
Is entirely, continually
Antagonistic to satsang.
You can see it
In yourself
How do you live satsang
From hour to hour?
You don’t
Satsang is a
Radical condition
And it does require
Everything of you.
It does require you
To absolutely lose face.
Truth must become
The point of view.
Require truth.
Don’t be cool
To a heart
That’s true.
Come to satsang
With real need,
Not with anything
To defend.
Everything
A man brings
To the heart
To defend
Is destroyed.
Everything
He defends
Is undermined.
Satsang contains
And communicates itself
As a demand.
Every moment
Is a demand
For attention.
What arises is never
The point,
But it is always
Only a paradox
And a test,
A form of the always
Prior demand,
Which is itself
The divine person,
The maha siddha,
The siddha-guru.
Consciousness is the demand,
And that
Has nothing to do
With the things
That arise.
Satsang is a fire!
This communion
Is not a place
Where we talk “philosophy.”
There is a living force
Enacted here.
It is a living
Consciousness.
This sadhana
Requires everything
Of you.
You must do
This sadhana
With great intensity.
I expect each one
To maintain
This satsang
Constantly.
The best thing
A man can do
Is spend his time
In satsang.
The quicker it becomes
In you,
The more intelligent,
The more “like” reality
You become.
If we were not here
In satsang together,
What would we be doing?
What is the alternative?
What’s on television tonight?
What could you possibly do?
All your alternatives
Are brief.
In satsang
Nothing is given.
Only that relationship
Is offered.
Nothing is offered
But satsang.
Nothing is given
But that relationship,
Because it is truth.
Satsang does not
Fulfill your search.
It is absolutely impossible
To believe
That there is only god,
To assume it,
To think it,
To gather it.
You have nothing
To resort to
Other than that
Real life
Which is satsang.
Satsang
Is the same
For everyone.
It is
Equally available
To all.
Live this satsang,
Enjoy this satsang.
For those
Who live satsang,
Satsang is sufficient. 4. The devotee: my devotee knows me in truth.
The sadhana of the student
Is to become human.
The sadhana of the disciple
Is to become spiritual.
The sadhana of the devotee
Is to become god.
My disciples embrace
The discipline of the teaching
Most fully.
And they know that i am
The principal discipline.
They find the siddhi
Of the divine person
Alive in my company.
For them, i am always present
And active as the perfect
Communication of the nature,
Condition, form, source,
And process
That is the world.
The discipline
Lives a life of revelation.
The life of a disciple
Is a waking life.
It is to live
Already awake.
In the life of every true disciple,
There has only been
The sudden communication
Of the heart.
The disciple’s attention
Is turned to the guru
Without conflict,
Without limitation.
Then the very living force
Of the disciple
Is manifested as bliss,
Happiness, love, intensity, devotion.
My disciple is turned to mem
But my devotee
Knows me in truth.
The true disciple
Is a devotee
Who simply lives
With his guru.
When you become
Communicative,
When you become
A real instrument,
When you cease to be
Involved in your own sadhana,
And have become happy
To live with each other
And make satsang available
–those are the signs
Of the devotee.
The true devotee’s attention
Is absolutely intense,
Absolutely constant,
Absolutely unwavering and pure.
That is what makes
A devotee valuable.
His self-sacrifice
Or surrender
Is spontaneous,
Coincident with his life
From moment to moment.
His realization
Is spontaneous, absolute,
Continuous.
There is absolute
Continuousness of bliss.
The devotee abides
Without dilemma
As that which cannot be
Avoided,
The form of reality.
His very existence
Is a paradox.
His enjoyment
Is a paradox.
He is not a man of concerns
Or of programs
Or of descriptions.
He is utterly free of all that.
He has become always
Already ecstatic.
And for such a one
There is therefore
No straightforward description
Of reality, or of the cosmos,
Or of life.
Only god is apparent
To such a one.
Only the paradox survives.
To be a devotee,
To live in satsang,
Is to live god
As your present condition.
The devotee is continually,
Effortlessly
Meditating upon
The divine person.
The divine process
Is activated
As a literal force
In the devotee.
Every devotee
Is wildly and priorly
Free in god.
They live in the divine,
And are free to put up with
The randomness of this world
In which there is no
Apparent security,
Because they depend utterly
On the divine.
When you become bound
To the principle of truth,
You will become active
As a devotee.
And the signs
Of the devotee
Will become active in you,
And you will be happy.
The devotee
Is always happy,
And he lives
With great intensity.
The most intense life
Of a devotee
Is a very active life,
Constant sadhana.
From the point of view
Of the devotee,
There is no discipline to it
At all.
He is just happy.
He is just functioning.
He enjoys this functioning.
He is not functioning because
It will make him realize the truth,
He is functioning because
He is already alive in the truth,
And these functions are
Natural to him.
They are the forms
Of his blissfulness.
There is simply direct realization,
Happiness under conditions
Of all possible functional states,
High or low.
That is the perfection
Of the devotee.
When god becomes your condition,
Nothing you’re doing
Makes any sense whatsoever.
You become a happy person.
You don’t have any more
Seeking to do.
You don’t have anything
More to accomplish.
You just become already happy.
You know that nothing
Is going to make you happy,
And you know very well then
That nothing is going to make
Anybody else happy either.
Either they are fundamentally
And unreasonably happy,
Or they are simply unhappy.
Perhaps consoled, occupied,
Distracted,
But basically unhappy.
In the devotee it is perfect.
It is obvious in the devotee
That there is happiness.
That is his nature,
His condition, his destiny.
Then everything that appears
Is samadhi.
Whatever he sees is that.
So he is only happy.
He can’t help but be happy.
He can’t sidestep it.
He can’t have an experience
That is unhappy, fundamentally.
It is all the same condition.
All of his parts open.
His heart opens.
All sorrow leaves his being.
His mind stops endlessly
Manufacturing his false vision,
And it becomes radiance only.
Those who live in god
Consent to be fools,
Ineffective in the effort
To transform man,
Unreasonable and already happy,
Without arguments or defenses.
Their happiness
Is their only argument.
There are some for whom
Freedom is that which
They already are.
Therefore, they are
Always already here,
Whose presence is love.
Ecstasy is the way of life,
And those who are ecstatic
Are free of concerns.
They only live and love
And are no longer
Profoundly useful.
They create and continue
And disappear
In the ecstatic
Life fire of god.
When that intuition
Has become intense,
When your life as a devotee
Is real,
Then you will become
Responsible for living god
In the world.
Such a one
Lives freely, happily,
With ease,
And also with
Intensity of being.
He is free of all destiny,
Even while apparent
Destiny or life continues
To arise in his own case.
The conscious force of reality
Becomes the present mover
Of his appearance.
One whose enjoyment is such
Knows himself and the entire
World-process as consciousness,
Prior happiness, or joy,
And his enjoyment
Consumes self, mind, and world.
The destiny of such a one
Is that light that is
Consciousness.
It is a destiny that
May not be described.
It is the timeless destiny
Of the prior light,
Inqualified heaven,
The god-world of brightness,
Not of motion,
Not of sight,
Not of hearing,
Not of cognition,
But of fullness,
In which no form
Stands out.
Those who become
The true devotees of the divine
In the presence of the
True guru-siddhi
Are free of the world,
And they may live in the world
As the presence of the divine,
As the presence of love,
Of freedom, of prior happiness,
Of conditionless bliss.
That happiness
Does not appear
Only as a kind of ecstatic madness,
But as an ordinary, human,
And enjoyable life
Free of the fucking divine vision!
Life from that point
Is fundamentally a celebration.
And the devotee
Loses his concerns for the world.
He never loses them,
He throws them,
He kicks the shit out of them,
To enjoy his ecstatic
Life in god.
Everything becomes consciousness,
Everything becomes his own
Consciousness.
He has nothing left but humor
While alive.
In the perfect devotee,
All limitations are undone
In the inclusive humor
Of is radical intuition.
He does not seek.
He only enjoys himself
At play.
In one who is
Truly conscious,
Life is no longer
A mystery.
He breathes
The very light of god.
He sees the alchemical
Transformation of the divine
Into life in every moment
And sacrifices himself
In return.
He only lives god
And everything
Is obvious to him.
Death is no longer
His concern, nor life.
All states are
The condition of truth
For him.
He knows no dilemma.
And life
Is no longer a question.
For such a one
There is not the least
Trace of “mystery”
Left in the universe.
He has no question,
And he has no answer.
He is only humorous.
The truly free man
Is alive in the world
With love and energy.
He is not contained.
He cannot be undone
By the world itself.
He has a certain madness,
A certain foolishness,
A certain wildness.
The highest form
Of his foolishness
Is his love.
In the case of a true devotee,
The world of experience
Are realized as the present
Play of god,
And everything works together
To instruct, enlighten, heal,
And positively transform
Such a devotee.
All these things
Are given as grace.
And nothing that is not useful,
Nothing that is not appropriate,
Is ever given to such a one.
Everything else is given
In the right moment.
One who is simply
The devotee of the lord
In satsang
Is given everything.
For the sake of devotees,
The human guru appears.
The essential responsibility
Of the guru is satsang,
To live the heart
To his friends.
Everything that i’ve told you
Before
Is to prepare you
To be a devotee.
The guru’s function
Is to create devotees.
The entire function
Of the human guru’s appearance
In the world
Is to create devotees.
Once devotees are created,
It isn’t necessary
For there to be
A human guru.
The eternal guru,
Who is also that human guru,
Is always present,
And devotees are
Always in touch
With that one.
The creation of devotees
Is what is necessary,
Not the creation
Of more gurus.
The function of the guru
Is to enter his devotee.
There is only one
Divine process in the world,
And that’s when
The guru manifests
And enters his devotee.
Literally,
The guru enters his devotee.
The guru is not a human being.
The lord is the guru.
And when the guru appears
In human form
It is the lord,
And he enters his devotee.
When the lord
Enters his devotee,
There is no doubt
About it.
For the natural devotee,
The physical form of the guru
Is sufficient.
He simply lives with his guru.
To become capable
Of contemplating or meditating
On the guru’s form
Is the ultimate capacity
Of a devotee.
Only if the devotee
Can be awakened
In the guru’s presence,
And made identical to him
In consciousness,
Can the teaching be realized.
The realization of the guru
Becomes that of the devotee.
The truth is being lived to him.
It is being lived as him,
By the grace of the guru.
One who becomes foolish
In relation to the guru
Is already happy.
One who accepts
The guru’s invitation
Is already eternally fulfilled.
Satsang is his condition.
Satsang is his need.
Satsang is his sadhana
Or eternal spiritual practice.
For the true devotee,
Guru is the meditation,
Guru is the realization.
Guru is the continuous
Contemplation and enjoyment
Of the devotee.
The true devotee
Is constantly involved
In perfect psycho-physical love
Of the divine person.
All his thoughts are the
Attention of mind
To the divine person.
He need not consider only
Holy or cultic thoughts
To be love of him.
All his speech is eloquent
About the divine person.
He need not consider
Only holy or cultic speech
To be love of him.
All his actions
Are devotion to him.
He need not consider only
Holy or cultic actions
To be love of him.
Then all that is received
Is received from him, and by him,
In love.
All that is yielded
Is yielded to him, and by him,
In love.
Such a devotee is my own. 5. The community:
The guru is a special
And temporary manifestation
Of the divine work.
He completes that special work
During his own lifetime,
And then leaves behind him
An ashram or community
Which lives satsang
And is responsible
For communicating its availability,
Its teaching,
And its practice.
“spiritual” forces of all kinds
Live within the community
That has come to me,
And these are not to be identified
With my special function.
They are the common life of the community,
To be responsibly realized, conserved and used
By virtue of the constant enjoyment
Of true satsang
And its power of understanding.
My disciples must understand themselves
In relation to methods, concepts, promises, beliefs
And the apparently extraordinary activity
Of subtle forces.
If they do so,
They will remain free of their illusions
In the world.
If they do not,
They have chosen
The way of narcissus
Rather than the way of satsang.
