His views on optics were published by the Royal Society, but his views on religion were far too dangerous to be shared publicly. He decided that the doctrine of the Trinity, in which the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are equally part of a triune God, was not part of the early church, but invented in the fourth century; the ultimate God was one, not three, though Christ was divine. Denying the Trinity was heresy and also illegal, so that Newton kept his religious writings private, and got special dispensation to remain at Cambridge without being ordained.

This was his Critique of Pure Reason, and it marked a radical shift: knowledge, once seen as discovery, was now understood as construction. But Kant’s contribution did not end in epistemology. The rational self, having dethroned the gods, now installs in their place what we will come to call science in the 20th century. And in this fragmentation, we begin to see the outlines of our present moment: a world of curated selves, optimized signals, and algorithmic identities. The will to power becomes the will to perform.

He called it “the fallacy of misplaced concreteness”—the error of confusing our abstractions for the living realities they attempt to describe. For Whitehead, this was not a minor philosophical misstep. It was the central wound of modern thought.
Reality, he insisted, was not a static collection of objects but a web of events, relationships, and becoming. The universe is not a mechanism but a process. Life is not composed of things, but of happenings.
But for me, Whitehead’s thinking has never been purely academic. I first encountered his Process and Reality in a seminar at the University of New Orleans in the 1970s, taught by the forever-enlightened Dr. Donald Hanks—a teacher whose passion could electrify even the most head-scratching metaphysics.

In his 1967 book The Ghost in the Machine, Koestler proposed that the problem was not simply political or cultural, but evolutionary. The human brain, he argued, was not a smooth ascent but a layered construction—reptilian, mammalian, rational—each stacked atop the other, not always in harmony. When stress or ideology or abstraction hijack the system, these layers fall out of alignment. The result: a species capable of reason, yet haunted by its own inner dissonance.
Koestler saw signs of this misalignment everywhere: in violence, bureaucracy, fanaticism, and in a growing worship of mechanistic thinking. In doing so, we may yet renew the story we are writing—not only with our tools, but with our minds and hearts intact.
But the path forward is not guaranteed. We must be willing to consider the warnings of those who came before us. As Alfred North Whitehead reminded us nearly a century ago:
“When we consider what religion is for mankind, and what science is, it is no exaggeration to say that the future course of history depends upon the decision of this generation as to the relations between them.”
And again:
“Religion will not regain its old power until it can face change in the same spirit as does science.”
Even Bertrand Russell, himself a great champion of scientific progress, could not ignore the shadows that scientific triumph might cast:
“We are perhaps living in the last age of man, and, if so, it is to science that we will owe its extinction.”
“This philosophy, if unchecked, may inspire a form of unwisdom from which disastrous consequences may result.”
And then there is Goethe’s haunting parable in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”—a tale of power invoked without the wisdom to control it. The apprentice, eager to demonstrate his mastery, calls the spirits to life. At first, they obey. Then, they overflow. Chaos ensues not from malice, but from ignorance of the limits:
“Ah, the word with which the master / Makes the broom a broom once more! / Ah, he runs and fetches faster! / Pouring water fast and steady… / Help me, help, eternal powers!”
In this poetic vision, we see our own reflection. We have summoned systems of great force—abstractions that obey our initial commands. But have we remembered the words to bring them back under control?

What remains is not abstraction, but awareness: a dimension of intelligence that is not symbolic but felt. Not constructed, but lived. Not spoken, but known through stillness, attention, and the deep receptivity that precedes the need to name.
In bringing the arc of abstraction full circle, this postscript offers no conclusion—only a turning. An invitation to remember that intelligence did not begin with thought, and need not end with machines. Beneath the speaking mind lies the listening one. And from that deeper place, we may yet begin again.
