Chapter 7: What Is Wisdom? Transcendence of Attention Is
Ecstasy Ecstasy is in the transcendence of attention, or the
transcendence of the conventional or binding implications of
experience or relational conditions. The gesture of
attention establishes both the primary sense of relationship
and the primary presumption of independent subjectivity (or
the implied self that perceives or conceives the objects of
attention). The independent self (the subject of attention)
becomes the binding post of individual existence once fear
and frustration motivate the mechanism of recoil in the
midst of experience. In that event, the objects and
relations of experience (or attention) become secondary to
the subject, and the complex patterns of subjectivity and
recoil from the patterns of relationship begin to be
established. The Way of Life is founded upon ecstasy, or transcendence
of the separative or independent self and its habits of
recoil, contraction, or the avoidance of relationship.
Therefore, the Way of Life is founded upon that insight or
sympathy which natively transcends the simple gesture of
attention, whereby both “self” and “object” arise as basic
and opposing conceptions, or primary and simultaneous
modifications of the prior, unconditional, Divine Self.
