True Religion Is the Natural
Evolutionary Process of Human Existence

True religion is the product of the inherent human
biological (or total psycho-physical) urge to the
evolutionary fulfillment and ultimate self-transcendence of
Man in the Radiant Reality, or Life-Principle, in which he
and the world are arising. Religion is not a matter of
belief in the evidence or results of religious activity on
the part of a certain few historical individuals. Religion
is not exclusively a matter of “revelation” in the sense of
the, specific ‘historical communications made by rare and
prophetic individuals. Rather, religion is the process
itself-the evolutionary and self-transcending process of the
psycho-biological transformation of Man.

The process of true religion is inherent in the
psychobiological structures of every human being, except
that it is only more or less developed in each individual.
The structures of the religious process are already in the
biological anatomy of the human individual. But the
development of those structures depends upon cultural
adaptation.

The problem is that religion is not commonly understood
as a native psycho-biological function in Man. Religion is
on is associated with symbolic cosmologies, archaic belief
systems, and illusions of mystical flight from the world. In
that case, true religious acculturation is suppressed and
obliged to remain at an infantile level. Kind the more
adolescent movement of scientific materialism is gradually,
and also rightly, destroying the credibility of such
childish religious culture.

The phenomenon generally and popularly known as religion
is a childish, even infantile, expression of our possible
higher acculturation and evolution. It is always associated
with childish cultism, symbolic rituals, and irrational
belief systems that can never be penetrated to the point of
establishing the true and universal religious process.

Religious cults are nearly always antagonistic to one
another-each claiming some kind of righteous superiority for
its special historical revelation. And the level of
participation in the limited cultures of such cults is
largely a matter of uninspected beliefs, external rituals,
and superficial codes of social conduct, There is nothing
morally, humanly, or spiritually superior, about such
“religious” consciousness.

Indeed, the whole affair of conventional religious
cultism is childish and subhuman, and only rarely do we find
any individual attaining higher human and evolutionary
transformations of his own character or body-mind as a
result of participation in the popular cults of
religion.

Even so, such religious cultism does represent the first
evolutionary level of the ultimate religious process.
Conventional religion is primarily an ancient achievement of
Man. The primary developments of such religious cultism
began to occur in the general time frame of approximately
1500 , x 1000 B.C., and it became gradually and essentially
fixed arid-changeless by approximately A.D. 700 to 1500.
After that period, the institutions of ancient religion
began to decline, and the modern era of the institutions of
scientific materialism began to ascend in importance.

However, the higher dimension of religion has also always
been practiced by a relatively few uncommon individuals.
Indeed, it was largely the response to the more conventional
or superficial aspects of such extraordinary personalities
that produced the great cultic movements of exoteric
religion among the masses. But such cultic movements are
created by and designed for the instruction and social
improvement of ordinary people, not men and women of the
more highly evolved or awakened type. Therefore, alongside
the development of exoteric religions there have always been
secret societies and esoteric groups founded on practice of
higher personal, moral, and biologically evolutionary
disciplines.

The esoteric societies of higher religion have recently
begun to become publicly communicative, particularly since
the late nineteenth century. This is also a sign of the
evolutionary trend of true religion. On the one hand, the
bearers of esoteric wisdom will be responsible for turning
the tide of the anti-religious and scientifically
materialist trend of modern societies. And, on the other
hand, the higher religious or evolutionary and spiritual
process that is communicated by such individuals will
replace the old cults of the conventional and subhuman
religions (which have now become false religions, since we
have fundamentally outgrown them).

Let me briefly state the nature of the new religious
culture, from my own direct experience. It is a process of
psycho-physical transformation engaged directly by the
individual. It is not founded on archaic beliefs or
philosophies, nor is it designed to achieve symbolic ends,
such as heaven after death, or cultic membership in the
future kingdom of some Teacher who is exclusively identical
to Truth and God. Rather, it is a process founded *on
self-critical insight into,, patterns of mind, feeling,
behavior, and experience, both subjective, or internal -to
the body-mind, and objective, or in the plane of relations
that are apparently external to the body-mind.

The mechanism of this higher and true religious process
is in the biological structures of the human body-mind
itself-not in the imaginary world of archaic religious
cosmologies. And that evolutionary mechanism is not merely
present in extraordinary individuals, but in every human
being. It is only more consciously activated or served in
extraordinary or more perfectly awakened individuals. But it
is present in everyone, and it may be awakened in anyone
through self-critical insight and higher disciplines of the
body-mind. And the process may be quickened in every case
through right spiritual association with more highly
developed and living Adepts and through natural
acculturation in mature spiritual communities.

The higher evolutionary mechanism in Man has not
generally been considered or studied by the scientific
establishment. The mechanisms that are commonly studied are
generally of a lower order, belonging to the subhuman
structures in Man, whereby he is seen in his likeness to the
less evolved life forms and the less-than-human motivations
of living creatures. Thus, to the degree that religion is
studied, it is considered only in these lesser terms, and
its limitations become more and more obvious as the era of
science progresses.

However, the higher evolutionary mechanisms in the
nervous system and brain have yet to be studied and
understood from a modern scientific point, of view, and thus
the future evolutionary and higher religious culture of Man
has yet to receive its scientific justification or “go
ahead” signal in the popular mind. Humanity in general is
now in a period of transition from the childish cultism of
archaic religion and the adolescent exclusivism of
scientific materialism to the future age of higher and
evolutionary-religious and spiritual culture.

I have, in such books as The Enlightenment of the Whole
Body, considered in detail the evolutionary mechanism
associated with higher and previously esoteric religion. Let
it suffice for me to say here that the evolutionary
mechanism is essentially associated with the central nervous
system.2 And the human individual is natively or
structurally disposed, through the stimulating effect of the
universal Life-Current in the central nervous system, to
grow beyond his present limits via a process of higher
personal and moral acculturation, and via superior,
religious or esoteric spiritual disciplines. Those
disciplines involve participatory submission of the
individual body-mind into the universal life-Current, via
the total awakening and activation of the central nervous
system.

This wisdom is not a new invention of my own. It has been
the basic presumption behind esoteric societies all over the
world for countless centuries. All of the extraordinary
phenomena and prophetic revelations exhibited by religious
leaders of the past were either the consciously achieved or
spontaneously demonstrated results and expressions of this
evolutionary process in their own psycho-physcial being.
There is no other basis for religion and religious report
(or even science and scientific report) than the yet only
partially demonstrated biological mechanism that is Man
himself in his cooperative submission to the Radiant and
Living Reality (or Life-Principle) in which he and the total
world are appearing, changing, and, ultimately,
dissolving.
