In this talk, Adi Da reveals the central insight and process necessary for genuine spiritual awakening. He illuminates how the Divine Event is not merely a conceptual ideal or an extraordinary experience but an essential reality to be realized through true surrender and participation in the spiritual process. This teaching challenges aspirants to go beyond superficial approaches and fully engage with the radical, heart-deep understanding of their practice.
For those dedicated to spiritual growth, this talk provides not only clarity but also a profound opportunity to reassess and deepen their relationship to the Divine Reality. August 23rd, 1975.
It was made in the Satsong Hall at Persimons when Bubba called for questions after Satsang. Bubba answers the question, what is Sadhana? And he describes what is required to pass through the Process of Understanding.
Bubba Free John (ADI DA SAMRAJ): What is Sadhana? That’s your question? (Laughter) You dare to come to me with that? (Laughter) Is that what you want of me (really mean)? I said many times that phenomenal conditions are not Sadhana – doing in some way that everybody finds are basically acceptable. The personal conditions of money, food, and sex, and studying in the proper order, serving others in ways that they find sufficient and belong to the community and coming here, and all of that, that is not Sadhana. Those are conditions for Sadhana, but they’re not Sadhana. Sadhana is the Conscious Process.
So many of you think that they are interested in spiritual life who have the sympathy for the teaching in some form. Come here and they’re able to fulfill all of these nominal conditions. Spiritual life is not silly little clubhouse business. It’s the most creative affair that a human being can do involved in.
Now, the opportunities are there to do such a thing, but you must be present and the degree of your availability shows itself every day. And if you are really interested in this process, then you pass through your lessons and you’ll be more fit for it every day, and you become capable of the dissolution of every day that Sadhana involves. And you’ll pass through the transformation that it requires of you. But if you’re not really interested in it, then various quantities in life, those possibilities in life itself are really what you’re committed to and you just want some sort of consoling possibility, concerning experience or whatever as your dues for being spiritual. Then at some point you’ll abandon even the nominal affair of your Sadhana and you’ll go and fulfill those desires. So the matter of Sadhana is never measured by your ability to fulfill a prescription. Truly, the whole affair of Sadhana depends on you. There’s no one who can’t do it, but there are some who are unwilling to do it, and among those who are willing to do it, or even those who go so far as enter the ashram for a time.
But you can hide behind all of the artifices of this community. It’s not a matter of knowing what Sadhana is, especially, and there’s plenty of communications about that. The study in your life here should certainly show you more and more than it is. It must be Realized. Sadhana must be realized. It’s not just something you do willfully, but even so, it’s not a matter of even having some conceptual idea that’s pretty basic about what Sadhana is. It’s a matter of your availability, your willingness to pass through the Divine Event, your willingness to pass through all the things that are required for that, because it’s not just a matter of attaining some psychological this that state. It requires everything of you ultimately.
Your question is not what is Sadjana its are you ready for it. Then you must be prepared in those moments of testing, of everything involved with, taking away at something you fundamentally cling to in your conventional life. In those moments of testing, it will be seen weather you are interested and willing, capable of passing through this process or whether you will cope out and go for your consolation. Everyone has the capacity to pass through this process, but not everybody has the balls for it, which is a better word than willingness because that’s what it requires. Not a sort of intellectual willingness, because there are times when you can’t find anything in the mind really that wants to go through it. (nervous laughter) It’s a very manly affair, male or female. It’s a manly affair, human affair, it tests you it requires strength….intelligence…
If you truly and whole bodily devotionally recognize Me
and truly and whole bodily devotionally respond to Me, you
are immediately changed, immediately set apart from your own
egoity, immediately set apart from your own past patterning,
with all of its artifacts.
If you truly and whole bodily devotionally recognize Me
and truly and whole bodily devotionally respond to Me, all
of the psycho-biography of ego is totally, absolutely,
finally gone.
You will notice that the patterning that is ego- I simply
falls away.
If you truly and whole bodily devotionally recognize Me
and truly and whole bodily devotionally respond to Me, you
must, necessarily, go through the conversion-process of
coming to understand the ground-zero position in which your
life now is happening.
You must recognize Me As I Am.
When you Know Me, you Know Reality Itself.
Then all of your ego-patterning ceases to be
relevant.
You are no longer happening.
Only the Divine Is Happening.
All of this Is the Divine Event.
There are no egos here not one, not at all.
This is the ground zero of ego-culture.
Ego-culture came to an end in the Ruchira Dham Event.
Now it is a new historical epoch for humankind.
Now everyone must catch up with Me.
Whole-bodily-responsive devotional recognition of Me Is
the Divine Avataric Basis for an entirely new world-culture
of humankind.
