First Three Stages of Life

FIRST STAGE (Birth to
7)

Adaptation

SECOND STAGE (Years
7-14)

Emotional-Sexual
Adaptation

THIRD STAGE (Years
14-21)

Mental-Intentional
Adaptation

Discipline is
physically
based

Discipline is
emotionally
based

Discipline is based on
understanding,
discrimination
and
will.

1. Create the child’s incident from
moment to moment.

2. Cultivate bodily intimacy.

3. Do not talk and
moralize—act!

4. Use loving force
to move the child bodily
into a different disposition. Clearly define
limits.

5. Teach the child to release negativity
through the breath cycle-“breathe in the good stuff breathe
out the bad stuff”—and remind the child that he or she
can be Happy in any given moment on the basis of this simple
breathing.

1. Encourage self-generated
responsibility through clear guidelines and positive
reinforcement.

2. Encourage the child to move into
self-transcending service.

3. Enter into agreements and grant rights
and privileges based on the child’s maturing
responsibility.

4. Encourage the positive expression of
emotion as love and attract the child to right action rather
than focus on his or her “problem.”

5. Awaken the child to the disposition of
blessing others through positive speech thought and action
and help the child to experience the breath process his or
her emotional life and the entire realm of Nature as
energy.

1. Help the teenager to become fully
responsible for the functions of the body-mind.

2. Help to awaken in the young person an
understanding of the principles of human existence and
spiritual life.

3. Allow the teenager to learn from the
natural consequences of his or her actions and grant access
to greater cultural freedom on the basis of the young
person’s demonstrated responsibility for the functions of
human life.

4. Encourage the young person to expand
his or her intimacy to the whole community and assume a
relationship of compassionate friendship rather than
continuing to play parent-child roles.

5. Assist the teenager to develop the
earlier exercises of breathing and feeling as
energy—into the formal practice of conductivity and
encourage him or her to learn to transcend emotional
reactivity and negativity through the practice of the
conscious process and conductivity.
