Review of Zen-Man
Ikkyu by James H. Sanford
by Michael Harings provides an introduction to his life
and dharma
According to James Steinberg, in Love
of the God-Man, Ikkyu was among the few Zen priests who argued that
his enlightenment (“satori”) was deepened by consorting with “pavillion
girls”. He entered brothels wearing his black robes, since for him sexual
intercourse was a religious rite. Stories of his “Crazy-Wise” antics are
so widespread that he has become a cult folk-hero in modern Japan.
Ikkyu restored the Myoshoji Temple and renamed it Shuonan
to show his respect for the reverend monk Daio-kokushi. The temple was
generally known as Ikkyu’s hermitage in Takigi, a village halfway between
Kyoto and the port town Sakai. The main hall, which was constructed in
1506, is among the oldest examples of Zen-style architecture in Kyoto and
Nara. It is now known as Ikkyu-ji Temple
