CHAPTER 30

Do Not Become Bound Up in the Search for Dominance and
Power

SRI DA AVABHASA: Cease to struggle with others and
yourself. Do not become bound up in the usual search for
dominance, consolation, pleasure, and release. There is
neither Final Release nor Ultimate Happiness in the
objective or the subjective realms of merely conditional
existence.

* * *

Do not manipulate others.

* * *

The essential motive of a human being is to be
universally attractive to others, loved by all, served by
all, consoled by all. It is the desperate motive of power,
the urge to manipulate independent self and others. It is
all a symptom of fear – the failure to love beyond all
limits.

* * *

The self-based, or self-contracting and self-preserving,
conception of existence is manifested via the psychology of
fear and conflict relative to all that is not the egoic
self. Therefore, the psychology of egocentric existence is
inherently disposed to seek control and dominance over all
that is not the egoic self. For this reason, individual
lives are a constant expression of anxiety, mechanically
involved in techniques of self-manipulation (in order to
preserve the egoic self) and other-manipulation (in order to
control or dominate whatever is not the egoic self).

* * *

I Have Observed That human individuals In The First Three
Stages Of Life Tend (Generally Unknowingly) To Relate (or
React) To all persons (and Especially intimates, and
Presumed rivals) of the Same sex As they Did (or Do) To
their own parent (or Otherwise Principal early-life
relation) of the Same sex. . . Relations With all persons
(and Especially the parent, and Also intimates, and Presumed
rivals) of the Same sex Generally Tend To Be Associated With
The Basic Struggle To Acquire A Powerful selfImage, An egoic
Center Of Strength, or The egoic Ability To Compete (and,
Thereby, To Survive, and Even To Dominate).

* * *

The usual man or woman, weak in love, seeks to control.
The usual man or woman seeks knowledge, solutions, and power
to control what is beyond knowledge and beyond the waking or
verbal states of mind. Such a person is often mean,
righteous, rational, blithe, and apparently fearless. Such a
person is always weak in love, in sacrifice, in sensual
sensitivity, and in understanding of the essentially
selfless, or undefinable, nature of the body-mind
itself.

* * *

The usual man or woman seeks control by all means, since
such a person fears that he or she and even existence itself
are out of control. That person makes sublime sighs whenever
he or she sees something orderly. But such a one does not
understand that all order is an arbitrary design, made of
repetitions of like things.

* * *

Order is Truth to Narcissus. Narcissus dies for the sake
of order. Narcissus dies because of order. He is egoically
“self-possessed”, possessed of the repetition of everything
he wants to continue to be. He repeats himself, literally.
He is fixed upon himself, the symbol of certainty. At last,
unable to yield to what is more than independent self, below
thought, above thought, outside the thinker, he contracts
upon himself, imploded on the instant of thinking.

* * *

A common misunderstanding of teachers and parents is that
children are supposed to feel they are the center of
everyone’s life, almost to the point that they begin to
think they are the center of the universe. There is no
reason why that tendency should be reinforced in anyone,
adult or child. Even at a very young age there is no cause
for children’s thinking they are the center of everyone’s
world. They must be brought into relationship with others.
They must be served to move out of their independent
self-involvement into the condition of relationship.

* * *

In your egoity, you tend not to presume the open,
nonegocentric Divine Self-Condition and to allow the energy
of life to flow through you in mutual interdependence with
all other living beings. Rather, you attempt in every moment
to draw all attention to the false and presumed “self’ at
the apparent center of experience, in order to reinforce the
illusion of its existence. Every practice in the Way of the
Heart acts to break through this self-enclosure by restoring
you in body, emotion, and mind to the condition of
relationship.

* * *

There is no game in God, no awful demand for clever
victory in the world or in the inward domain. The eyes may
remain open, and the body may move about, but Divine
Self-Realization is always a matter of simple, direct,
Ecstatic Heart-Identification with Me, the Love-Blissful
Divine Person, Who is Alive as the world, Active as the
body, Conscious as the mind, and Existing as the Heart of
every being.

* * *

Do not imagine that you must have absolute knowledge
before you will become Happy, participate freely, submit
yourself, be a receiver and a transmitter. Live in My
Love-Bliss, in Inherent Happiness now.

* * *

As My devotee in the Way of the Heart, once you are
Awakened to the Wisdom of a self-transcending, or ecstatic,
practice in relationship to the process of experience, then
you gradually cease to indulge the automaticities of stress,
self-indulgence, and exaggerated efforts to know and to
accomplish and to be overwhelmingly powerful in the world.
You do not, however, turn upon yourself and away from the
relational patterns of experience. Rather, you simply feel
through and beyond the stress of events-you acknowledge the
component of self-binding contraction in every moment of
experience and transcend that compressive force in direct
relaxation of the patterns arising in the body-mind.

* * *

You are mortal. And the only victory you have on Earth is
your devotion to Me.
